could this be a sign that oakland is bouncing back? a number one ranking in a prominent lifestyle magazine highlighting oakland's food scene. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. did she succeed the kamala harris interview with fox news also? the good news in oakland. that's coming up in just a few minutes. but we start with the scandal in san jose. mayor matt mahan and the city council want councilman omar torres to step down. the 42 year old torres is accused of sexual misconduct with a teenage boy. the investigation started when torres actually went to san jose police about two weeks ago to report that he was being blackmailed by someone, that he had a relationship with in the past. investigators found out that the alleged extortionist was a minor when that relationship started. a search warrant affidavit revealed numerous graphic text messages reportedly written by the councilman, talking about sex with a minor and other lewd behavior. today, the mayor acknowledged torres is innocent until proven guilty,

oaklanders to actually feel safer. but we do know that the data shows that crime is at a historic low. >> air this week, governor newsom announced that oakland is also getting more than 28 million dollars in state funding to address homelessness. specifically. how do you see this supporting your existing strategy? >> yes, 28 million dollars. we want to thank governor newsom's office for this. this will help sustain great work that we're already you know, this is in regards to the smaller, tiny homes. what have you? again, i've issued an executive order. we are going now and we are clearing encampments that are impeding on sidewalks that are next to businesses, residents, schools or parks in. and of course, we're going out. leading with compassion. we are actually offering housing and shelter and resources. however, if you don't take these resources, you will be asked and forced to move again. we need our sidewalks to be returned. back to the public are perks to be turned back to public. and so that's 28 million dollars
