fireworks and gunshots rang off on new year's eve in oakland city. councilmember noel gallo heard them from his neighborhood. it was out of control in my neighborhood there in the fruitvale area on the block. next to me on the block, the sun. >> the fireworks, the gunshots that were going on it started early with police responding to a shooting on 14th street around 07:15am. one person was found shot and paramedics responded, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. the violence continued with the second homicide on 70th ave around 07:45pm when a person was stabbed to death. lastly, 4 people had to be taken to the hospital because of a shooting on second street shortly after 10:15pm, 3 of them in stable condition. but the 4th person succumb to their injuries youth alive is an open organization that works to create a safer oakland, free of violence. laura greenberg with youth alive says violence at its core is a public health issue. the more we spend time building positive community relationships, connecting individuals with resources and also on t

police say at least for oakland, oakland businesses were hit since late last night. that includes two of those safeway stores, one on redwood below skyline avenue. the other on fruitvale avenue, about one mile away. and there was another safeway break-in early yesterday at the shopping center near broadway terrace. in that case, police say workers were in the store when it happened, but fortunately no one was hurt. in all, thieves hit at least seven businesses since late saturday, including a smash-and-grab of a car. a video shows the car slamming into the security gate at a smoke shop, and then about a half dozen people run inside to steal whatever they can. this happened around 4:00 this morning on san pablo avenue. meanwhile, a massage business and two convenience stores also were targeted early this morning. the owner of the massage store says the thieves just broke the door lock. they pushed the door and open it. that's very easy. that really is very easy. it's not. it's not. the lock is no special lock. police so far are not talking about whether any or all of

staying in oakland. that's where police are investigating a string of overnight burglaries, including three different safeways targeted by thieves in a 24 hour period. that includes two safeways, one on redwood below skyline avenue and the other on fruitvale avenue, about a mile away. this all follows a safeway break in early yesterday at the shopping center near broadway terrace. in that case, police say workers were in the store when it happened. thankfully, no one was hurt in all. thieves hit at least seven businesses since late saturday, in one case backing a car into the front door to gain entrance. also in oakland, firefighters and people living in the oakland hills are sounding the alarm over the closure of two fire stations for the next six months. we're talking about station 25 near joaquin miller park and station 28 on grass valley road near lake chabot golf course. the city says the move will save oakland about $5 million, which is a small step toward closing that $130 million budget deficit.
