enter irs special agent arlette lyons, based in oakland. also been in touch with the investigative producer who tipped off martinez. and with lyons now on the case, amanda was now under federal investigation for wire fraud. >> we knew she was using a website, and we knew people were paying her electronically, and we knew that she was telling people that she had cancer and she did not. >> the investigative work of both martinez and lyons eventually led to amanda c riley pleading guilty in federal riley court, admitting to scheming more than $100,000 in donations. the judge sentenced her to five years and restitution. the work muscatello, martinez and lyons did now setting a precedent for any future cases, something meaningful for them all. >> so my twin sister had cancer the whole time during this. the day of the search. >> warrant, my mom was having surgery for breast cancer. >> lyons sister, kristen kane, passed away in november of 2023. >> this is what i was able to do my little fight for, you know, in her name. >> for his part, martinez

the family of a security guard in oakland is in mourning. tonight, the guard at highland hospital was shot and killed. ktvu crime reporter henry lee joins us live with a look at what they're learning about this case. henry. well, curtis. >> heinz job as a guard at highland hospital was to keep the peace as doctors work to save the lives of gunshot victims. now his family is heartbroken after he became a gunshot victim himself. >> he was trying to stop a violence and end up getting, you know, losing his life to violence. >> the family of 28 year old curtis heinz is in mourning after he was shot and killed in east oakland over the weekend. heinz worked as a security guard at highland hospital in oakland, helping to keep the peace. this is the trauma center where oakland's gunshot victims come in for treatment and where tensions can be high. his loved ones had no idea he would end up as a gunshot victim himself. >> if he was in the middle of any type of confrontation. he wanted the best for everyone. >> a relative of his who did not want her na

it's in west oakland. plaques were once right there were installed in 2015 to commemorate the artis that performed on seventh street. they include b.b. king, aretha franklin, and etta james. they were located between wood street and willow street. those plaques were the west coast blues society isn't sure when the plaques were taken, but they're devastated by the loss. we want to perpetuate the history of seventh street just that simple. we want everybody to know that they are on sacred grounds. now, each plaque costs more than a thousand bucks, and their removal left behind nearly $150,000 in damage. here's what they look like before they were taken. a gofundme has been created to replace those plaques. new developments in the case of a triple stabbing in berkeley. police have made an arrest. it happened about a week and a half ago. investigators say they got a call to russell street, not far from san pablo park playground, looking into reports of a stolen vehicle. the caller was the delivery van owner. h

the west oakland bart station.what the stolen ones look like. the four bronze plates within that plaque ripped out of the sidewalk. the west coast blues society, a bay area nonprofit commission, created this display as part of an oakland music walk of fame going back to 2015. that's when it was first installed. it was a way to celebrate a part of oakland's cultural history back in the world war two era, and in the decades afterwards, seventh street in west oakland was known as the harlem of the west. it had a vibrant commercial and entertainment district of black owned businesses, world famous music clubs, theaters, and performance venues lined the streets. musicians from etta james and b.b. king to later aretha franklin performed at those clubs. now, the walk of fame display was an important way to highlight that part of oakland's past. the director of the west coast blues society, which installed that display, says he's not sure exactly when these 40 name plates were stolen. it may have been weeks or even months

in oakland, velena jones, nbc, bay area news. an overnight storm in southern california, helping containment efforts on those los angeles area wildfires. the eden fire stands at 98% containment, while the palisades fire is now up to 94%. all final evacuation orders were officily lifted today. however, rainfall also brought landslides to the palisades burn scar area. take a look at this. many roads were closed, blocked by debris after a flood watch moved through the area. it just expired about two hours ago and today the five freeway has reopened after an overnight snowstorm closed both directions of the grapevine ornight. the storm is moving out of the region today. all right. and back here at home, things are getting chillier as well as we take a live look at the bay bridge. that is a beautiful view of the city for sure. and, jeff, we are expecting rain, but i guess it depends on where you live. yes. i mean the difference between the haves and the have nots with this storm system. it's going to be just so close. so we're going t

it's the failure to yield rate has gone up about 200%. >> oakland resident randy mandel is part of the north hill community association public safety committee, which has been involved in debates around changing the oakland police departments pursuit policy. >> and then also include burglaries and thefts such as commercial burglary and home burglaries. >> the oakland police department modified its pursuit policy in 2014, after an audit found that pursuits led to frequent crashes and injuries to bystanders and others. in 2022, then police chief leronne armstrong added language to terminate chases over 50 miles an hour unless granted permission from a watch commander. then in 2023, then oakland mayor shengtao asked governor newsom to send in the chp to help fight crime. newsom says the chp has recovered more than $13 million in stolen goods and arrested more than 1400 suspects since then. but he says if the chp is going to stay, the city needs to loosen restrictions on opd's pursuit policy. mandel agrees. >> that actually the pursuit policies and the risk assessment for both opd and chp

well, the oakland police commission held another meeting last night about possible changes to oakland's police pursuit policy. police chief floyd mitchell talked about his proposed changes at the meeting. it includes lifting a 50 mile per hour limit for police pursuits and allowing the police to pursue suspects in property, crime and sideshow cases. right now, oakland police are only allowed to pursue if there is reasonable suspicion that a person committed a violent crime. chief mitchell says it's time to reevaluate the policy and says more feedback is needed. >> my memo outlines substantive changes to the current policy that need to be vetted by everyone. the draft complete policy revision has several changes and is in no way a final product. >> now, governor newsom and leaders of the chp want oakland to change its pursuit policy. the police commission did not vote on that proposal last night. >> kendrick lamar will have some company on the super bowl halftime stage, grammy winning singer sza announced on instagram that she will be joining lamar for his performance. the announcement c

the brother of an oakland music lend was shot and killed this morning in oakland's melrose neighborhood-year-old wayne shaw was the older brother of rapper too short and the victim of the city's 12th homicide case this year. andrea nakano has more on that. >> reporter: this is where gunfire erupted on 49th street in oakland. police say the suspects tried to break into this building by ramming a car into the garage door. investigators believe that's when 61-year-old wayne shaw came out to see what was going on and one of the suspects in the car fired several rounds, striking the older brother of rapper too short. shaw becomes the 12th murder victim already this year in oakland. just a few weeks ago two people were killed and one was injured outside a birthday party in north oakland. nicole harrison was born and raised in the city and she says while violent crime is a problem, perception may be worse than reality. >> not really like that in oakland. it's just a name oakland done gave itself. it doesn't make it no better. >> reporter: it is enough of a concern that she plans on moving out

it's another big blow for the city of oakland. the waterfront hotel at jack london square has announced it is closing its doors with little warning. tomorrow will be the hotel's last day in business, as nbc bay area's jodi hernandez shows us the port of oakland says the hotel's owner has stopped paying rent. i had a lovely stay. i think my room is great. the conference was great. ebonie smith just wrapped up a conference at oakland's waterfront hotel. but the baltimore woman says she just learned she's among the hotel's very last guests. after 35 years. jack london square's waterfront hotel is closing its doors. the conference leaders made an announcement, and they let us know that the. this will be our farewell to the hotel. so we'll be like one of the last guests to be staying there. the hotel's operator, the hyatt corporation, says effective tomorrow, the hyatt will no longer be operating the hotel. in a statement, the general manager said the well-being of our guests and colleagues remains a top priority, and we are working wi
