long, american history tv is joining our comcast cable partners to showcase the history of oakland, california. to learn more, visit c-span.org/city tour. we continue now with our look at the city of oakland. >> the first significant number of chinese migrants came after the gold rush. in 1848.discovered to china in mid-to late 1848 and people started coming about 10. inpicked up with more coming 1849 along with people from all over the world because the discovery of gold was a big deal. san francisco was where all the ships coming from asia dropped off its passengers. san francisco was the first place chinese migrants would see , but eventually, oakland because it was across the bay and probably an easy boat ride in those days across san francisco bay started discovering oakland had favorable conditions, good agricultural fields, a sunnier climate. that occurred about the 1850's. the china exclusion act was passed by the congress in 1882. before that, there was a great deal of hostility and violence in formally against chinese miners and chinese workers. foratown became a refuge many of those
