long, american history tv is joining our comcast cable partners to showcase the history of oakland, california. to learn more, visit c-span.org/city tour. we continue now with our look at the city of oakland. >> the first significant number of chinese migrants came after the gold rush. in 1848.discovered to china in mid-to late 1848 and people started coming about 10. inpicked up with more coming 1849 along with people from all over the world because the discovery of gold was a big deal. san francisco was where all the ships coming from asia dropped off its passengers. san francisco was the first place chinese migrants would see , but eventually, oakland because it was across the bay and probably an easy boat ride in those days across san francisco bay started discovering oakland had favorable conditions, good agricultural fields, a sunnier climate. that occurred about the 1850's. the china exclusion act was passed by the congress in 1882. before that, there was a great deal of hostility and violence in formally against chinese miners and chinese workers. foratown became a refuge many of those

[applause] the visiting oakland california with the author of ways what it teaches 7 million kids and how its lessons could change food and farming forever. >>> in organization that focuses on the development and serves 7 million kids in the united states and around the world into the turn of the last century in 1902 and 1903 it was a project of the agricultural extensions. there were the techniques and the problem but they were running up against is that. they were doing the things the same way their ancestors came over from europe, so very cleverly. they had some new technology as well and they were interested in those so it started out as a way to reach. they were all from the area and they were all teenagers. this was a little bit unusual in that most of the kids that live in urban and suburban areas are not involved in the livestock products and these kids they were following were. >> there are sort of smaller competitions throughout the year but it's kind of the culmination for kids that are raised in livestock. there are two ways that you can compete in the fair. the first way

california first poet laureate. she was crowned during the panama pacific international exposition in 1915, 100 years ago. this is her centennial. she was oakland's first public library in and she was california's most elaborate poet for at least 50 years. she was born in the mormon community in illinois. her father was don carl smith, the youngest brother of joseph smith, the founder of the mormon church. she was raised in the mormon community. her father died when she was only four months old, and six months later her mother became joseph smith's sixth wife. when joseph smith was murdered in jail she then became a plural wife of george smith, a cousin. when the mormons were forced out of illinois, ina's mother not to follow brigham young or the mormons to salt lake. she came to california a few years after the gold rush started. there's one story that ina told years later where she just started school in los angeles and she was probably 15, and she was walking along a road in the level of los angeles, very small community, inched -- and it was a very hot day and she came upon a newspaper clipping the kind of had blown into her path. she picked

emergency crews in oakland california are finally able to free a construction worker trapped in a sewer line. officials say the trench collapsed on him shortly after noon on tuesday. rescue crews had shore up the trench so they can safely extricate the man. he is now at a hospital for observation. time for a look at weather... here's what you need conditions can lead to dangerous crashes. case in point... a 13- vehicle pileup halted traffic on interstate 70 in indiana nine tractor trailers and four cars were involved. authorities say that the pile-up was caused by a semi driving too fast for the conditions. amazingly... there were no life- threatening injuries as a result of the multi-vehicle pile up on i-70, but 3 people were transported to a local hospital for treatment. the most serious injury reported was a broken leg. after a photograph of sean penn shaking the hand of jo was released, the shirt worn by the mexican drug lord has been in high demand. the shirt, sold by "barabas", have been carried by retailers for years. but the barabas after the drug kingpin's attire hit the world
