a new audit in oakland is frustrating and angering a lot of people. it shows the city dropped the ball on a major violent crime reduction prram. now oakland is looking to revive that program. the program is called operation cease-fire. it uses city data and resources to focus o the most violent gangs and individuals, especially repeat offenders. but it also proded ucial services in neighborhoods like mentoring and life coaching to combat the lure of gang life. according to the audit, operation cease-fire worked from 2012 to 2017. the program cut oakland's homicides by more than 40%. auditors say oakland began moving away from the program in 2020 because of the pandemic and staffing shortages. you can see on this chart homicides began climbing up again. oakland city leaders are taking the results of this audit very seriously. in a statement, mayor sheng thao says she is resurrecting operation cease-fire. that includes hiring a new department head for violence prevention who helped implement operation cease-fire before. >> i know this type of a focus is what oakland need

two years after governor newsom committed to installing hundreds of cameras on state freeways oakland city leaders say they are still waiting to see them in action. are these cameras working? are they capturing data? can we utilize this datasharing to help track and identify those who are committing the crimes wreaking havoc in our community? >> reporter: according to the caltrans map there are dozens of cameras on the freeway, but it is unclear if any are new. we found around 50 total, short of the 63 the state claims were installed. we are at 880 and 31st where there are two cameras, one appears to be working and another is off-line. here is another, this camera is off-line, the same story for the next exit. just this week the state and caltrans told us the new cameras when up between january and august of last year in partnership with chp. caltrans cites security reasons for not providing the exact locations. a councilmember has been working with local law enforcement and the mayor's office and explains they were not ever told cameras were installed. >> we have been seeking answers. to

and we spoke with her at a martin luther king day community event in oakland yesterday under the oakland citythe oakland police commission who are in charge of finding and interviewing candidates to fill the police chief job when the commission then the commission gives a list of at least three candidates to the mayor, the mayor selects one. now, last month, mayor shengtao rejected all three candidates at the commission gave her. that short list had included former police chief laurent armstrong, which mayor tao fired last year and said she would never rehire again in the mayor's office, and the commission accused each other of playing politics and now the mayor says the commission shouldn't be involved in the police chief hiring process at all. this process needs to be streamlined and so i will be working actively with other stakeholders to ensure that there's a ballot measure that that the mayor should actually choose who her police chief is now changing this process would require a change in the oakland city charter, something only the voters could approve by ballot measure. the mayor didn
