the streets in downtown oakland often looked like a battlefield. there were 1,000 demonstrators in downtown oakland. right now down to about a handful. different scene out there this morning. noel walker is there this morning. she will have a live report for us in the next half hour. >>> several protesters were hurt during the long and very tense demonstration. most of the injuries, we're told, are cuts and bruises. look at these pictures. but we do have unconfirmed reports of serious head injuries as well. protesters say most of the injuries are tied to the flash bang grenades and tear gas canisters fired by police. we talked to one protester who rushed to help an injured man. >> i got a ton of tear gas in my eyes and i couldn't help it. i needed to carry the man out. i needed to go back for him. >> so far we have no official word on the exactly how many protesters were hurt. no official word on the number of arrests as well. now, at one point police officers were surrounded by hundreds of demonstrators in the streets around city hall. the protest

now it is free-flowing all the way up into downtown oakland. to the bay bridge they did turn the metering lights on. so now we are left with this backup. it is jammed solid to the 880 overcrossing already this morning at 6:45. so you can see it is brake lights, they are cycling through the metering lights relatively slowly. no incidents at the bay bridge this morning but down the eastshore freeway, that drive time is almost a half hour now on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. we are also seeing delays growing on westbound 580 through the altamont pass. that drive time is 27 minutes past those wind turbines out towards 680 and the dublin interchange. the golden gate bridge shot, earlier in the morning he would were seeing a lot of fog across the deck at least on the san francisco side of the span. but it looks like things have improved. so now traffic is free-flowing between marin and san francisco in both directions. mass transit is on time. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find

oakland. >> right now teargas is hanging in the air throughout much of downtown oakland. earlier today police used loud speakers telling demonstrators to qleer the area around city hall. when that didn't happen, this is what happened next. police warned the crowd they would use teargas if if the protesters didn't leave, and they kept their promise. they were choking teargas near oakland city hall. this took place at 7:45 and scattered several blocks away. this was not the first time demonstrators tangled with police today. around 6:00 police used flash bang grenades after demonstrators swarmed around a handful of officers trying to make an arrest on washington and a street. demonstrators flung paint and other objects at the officers until reinforcement moved in and pushed the crowd back. a few moments earlier around 5:30, the several hundred marchers hit a wall of marcherswho prevented the demonstrators from reaching police headquarters. there was pushing and shoving with officers arresting a man and woman. the march was loud, but peaceful when it kicked off from the oakl

oakland, but few like this one tonight. police fired tear gas at protesters in downtown oakland after police ignored police orders to dispurse. here's what it looked like. a half hour ago, this is from chopper 5. once the police fire the tear gas, the crowd scatters. tonight's protests are in response to this morning's oakland police raid to bust up the occupy oakland encampment at the plaza. robert lyles has been out on the streets all night long covering the story. robert, what's the latest? >> reporter: behind me is 14th and broadway and it is effectively the line in the sand, allow me to step out of the way. on the west side of 14th street are oakland police. they are determined not to allow occupy oakland demonstrators back on to city hall property. the camera slowly pans to the right, you can see that city hall and frank ogowa plaza below. surrounding all the streets of downtown for the past six hours have been occupy oakland demonstrators. many of them recently dispursed from this very intersection after police fired a number of tear gas canisters into the crowd. police saying that they were forced to fire those tear
