let's go to nbc's jodi hernandez who joins us in downtown oakland where there are a few hundred protesters in your area. >> reporter: that's right. you can bet there are a lot of unhappy people here in downtown oakland tonight. as you mentioned, a couple hundred demonstrators have gathered here. they're holding up signs that say "arrest darren wilson" and "black lives matter." once the decision was made somebody got up on a bull horn and announced it to the crowd. the crowd then started marching. they're on the march as we speak. we believe they're marching toward the oakland police department chanting "no justice, no peace." now so far though the crowd is growing, things have remained peaceful. i just got a text from the oakland police spokesperson who says everything is peaceful as of right now. again, the crowd is on the move chanting certainly not happy, but keeping peaceful. the city of oakland has also opened four what they call healing centers across the city. those are places for people to go and express their emotions, get help dealing with their feelings and express themselves. l

oakland. in fact, right now, our nbc's chopper showing that crowd on the move right near downtown oakland. night, you might recall, they blocked the 580 freeway. right now, you're looking at the 980. this is right alongside downtown freeway. the protesters on the extension, and during rush hour at 6:30, all those cars literally stocked in their tracks. this will back up traffic presumably to the 880 and surrounding freeways. so quite a mess during this rush hour, and it's because the protesters have now leaked on to the freeway. let's bring in nbc's jodi hernandez who's down below with more details. jodi, what do you know? >> reporter: raj, i can tell you within the last few minutes, we've seen a number of police cars with lights and sirens on, move out of here. a van full of officers also just left. they are responding, we can assume, to that freeway protest. again, about at least 100 protesters have now made their way on to 980 at 18th and castro. this is a similar scene to what we saw last night, and something that this police department was hoping to avoid. again, dozens of police offi
