this is something we are looking at, the oakland hills and the fire danger is high today. especially in the east bay hills, that is where a red flag warning is in effect and will remain in effect over the next few days. in fact just yesterday, we saw in fairfield, a fire broke out and crews were able to contain it. we would have had a lot more rain by now and that would have i will eliminated it but they are concerned about more brush fires breaking out and that's why they broke out a number of seasonal firefighters and 125 of them are ready to go and crews of course are ready and worried about those high winds and we are talking being 40 miles per hour possible at higher elevations. >> it is possible to have a wildfire and we are asking everybody to be extremely cautious during those times. >> reporter: now to be ready for one of those big fires if it were to breakout, cal fire has several water dropping helicopters on standby in morgan hill and lake county and they have tankers in chico and they are readied to fly if need be. the brush is extremely dry and moisture levels

clearance around their property and glad to hear the oakland firefighter -- fire department is on heightened alert. extra engines will be responding up in the hills. >> that gives me reassurance and the better cooperation between the berkeley and oakland fire department is reassuring also and i just think as homeowners we're more aware. >> reporter: during the next couple of days, the forecast calls for wind gusts topping 40 miles per hour in the high elevations. the lack of rainfall has firefighters on edge. >> this is a little bit scary to me as a career firefighter. it's extremely dry. >> reporter: deputy fire chief mark hoffman says crews are carefully monitoring the winds and if things get bad enough, firefighters may start patrolling the hills to keep an eye out for any flareups. >> we'll go into the same protection mode we would normally do in the middle of the summer. this is what's unusual, it's january. >> reporter: calfire is gearing up right now by adding on an additional 125 seasonal firefighters. these are folks who normally would be working during the hot, dry summer months. and while firefighters are on alert, they also need help

. >>> red flag warning in effect, very unusual, alex savage is in the oakland hills, a hot spot with how cal fire is preparing, alex? >>> well, the brush is extremely dry around the bay area and firefighters are bracing for gusty conditions especially in the east bay hills and north bay hills and this says it all, a red flag warning is in effect and these are unusual conditions this late in the season. firefighters said we would have had more rain at this point and there would not be the threat of brush fires. there was the start of a small fire but they quickly got it under control. they had some high elevation points and that's why cal fire has hired back some of their seasonal firefighters and they are beefing up staffing and waiting for rain during these winter months. >> until we see significant rainfall, we have that mechanism in place to keeping our additional staffing available to us. so i do not see an end to this until we get that rainfall. >> they want to be ready for that big fire incase it does breakout. they have several helicopters filled with helicopters and they are r

the teams in oakland hills say if it is worse they may benefit up staffing. >> if it becomes windy and dry today, they may bring additional units up from down the hill or they may put hill patrol into operations if necessary. >> they say this is a community effort and they need everyone to be watching. don't do anything that could even make the smallest spark like using power tools in your yard or having a chain dragging behind on your car. that could start a little fire and they are afraid it could grow quickly. this watch is in effect until thursday. >>> cal fire is so concerned about the high fire they are hiring back seasonal firefighters across the state. that will mean 120 firefighters coming back to work early in the bay area. this is so rare at this time of year that veteran four fighters can not remember anything like this. cal fire will keep extra firefighters on duty, staff more engines and have equipment ready 4 hour as day to respond quickly to any new fire. >> the fire concern is not going anyway any time soon. meteorologist, mike nicco, is outside the studios. how long w
