this is a story involving both san leandro and oakland police. as you mentioned, the chase started in san leandro andened in oakland at bancroft and durant. we have been here since about 4:15 and when we arrived it was an active scene. it was taped off with police tape and oakland was on scene collecting evidence. the scene cleared, but this is what we know. it started with a chase with san leandro police chasing a jaguar that ended here in oakland when it crashed into a parked oldsmobile and a light pole. at this point we are not sure exactly what unfolded, but an officer fired his weapon and as a result one woman is now dead this morning. we don't know if she was driving that jaguar or her connection to the chase in the first place. we have also heard that one man is also hurt, but that has not been confirmed. we are working to get more information. according to our records, the last officer-involved shooting with police happened in october of 2008. it has been more than two years. reporting live in oakland this morning, marla tellez, today in t

oakland police chief is not going to be here at police headquarters today. he's in washington d.c. on a mission. he's collaborating with oakland unified school district superintendent tony smith to come up with a way to strengthen bonds with police and students. the two helped devise a pilot program on the middle school level. the police department would place six officers at four middle school campuses. madison, west lake roosevelt and brick. they would impose safety, steer kids away from crime and help build better relationships with students on the verge of joining a gang or straying from school. today the chief is in d.c. lobbying for funding for this program which needs nearly $6 million. we attended a press conference on monday where the cheer discussed a $10.5 million grant for oakland youth health care and targeting at risk teens. he explained why starting at this level is so critical. >> i also get on an airplane to go back to washington d.c. to ask for the funding so we can focus on middle schools in the city of oakland. the middle schools are looking to become our ground

now oakland police are actually handling this investigation, but it was a san leandro police officer ed the trigger. why? i think this sign right here explains it all. we are on the border of san leandro and oakland. our police sources tell us that the deadly shooting started as a car chase in san leandro but ended in oakland. a man and a woman were allegedly driving a stolen jaguar and led san leandro authorities on a brief chase. once they crossed the intersection of bancroft and durant, it becomes oakland. happened last night about 10:30. witnesses say the jaguar skidded. you can see chalk marks outlining the path there. it crashed into a parked car. that is when the suspects got out and gunfire erupted. neighbors tell us they heard at least nine shots. and we are told that the female suspect was shot and killed by a male officer. the male suspect was also wounded but suffered non-life threatening injuries. now oakland detectives are handling the investigation as we mentioned since technically the shooting happened in their city. once again it is only steps. right now i'm standing
