oakland police, though, in the end arrested nine people. one of them apparently had a replica gun or a bb gun on him. six of the nine people not even from oakland, according to oakland police, which has been the case before when these type of protests break out. but oakland police are saying that several hundred people started to gather downtown early in the evening, protesting the acquittal of george zimmerman in florida who shot and killed teenager trayvon martin. it started peaceful. then as night fell, that's when the clashes started. windows broken. buildings tagged by protesters wearing dark masks. and american flag lit on fire. oakland police say they even had fireworks, bottles, rocks thrown at them. police had to call in mutual aid from many outside agencies to come in and help. one waiter at flora restaurant apparently hit in the head with a hammer -- a hammer-type object as he tried to protect a window. many of them had been broken already over the weekend protests. >> one of the windows smashed through. someone literally sitting

in oakland, police made sure they outnumbered protesters. partment fell under scrutiny for being unprepared following saturdays verdict. police handed out tickets and made one arrest, a much different scene from monday nights rallies. a city council meeting was held last night, and neighbors talked about their concerns following tuesday night's violent protest. they said they do not feel their city is prepared for what *could happen if the violent protests continue. paul figueroa from the oakland police deptment says officers were prepared with a contigency plan when the verdict came down on saturday. he says police presence has been growing each day, but it is sometimes difficult to control the crowds. police are asking anyone with videos or photos that can help find more suspects from the attacks on tuesday evening to call the oakland police department. while protesters stayed fairly peaceful last night, a good deal of damage was already done in oakland when more than 250 people took to the streets on monday night. a program called "youth r

this morning, ktvu's tara moriarty talked one on one with oakland's police chief who outlined the department's plan. >> reporter: violence has grips the streets of oakland ever since the zimmerman verdict. it's left behind a trail of destruction. last night the city council demanded to know why police were caught off so guard july 13th once the verdict was read and then again on monday when protesters swarmed 880, blocking traffic. >> some of these things are somewhat spontaneous. that adds to the challenge of it. in the wake of the verdict, the information we were getting was all pointing to a significant rally and march on the sunday. and so we staffed according to that. in hindsight we should have put more people out on saturday night. we've learned from that and we're working on that to ensure that doesn't happen again. >> reporter: this weekend, all regular days off for police officers have been canceled. officers will be patrolling the streets friday and saturday night. local business owners say it's about time. >> i think it's -- there's a great deal of frustration around the vandalism

oakland police are looking for clues of a 66-year-old woman killed while driving. the 66-year-old judy salamon lived less than a mile from where she was shot yesterday afternoon before 1:30. police say many shots were fired and after judy salamon was shot the car crashed into a parked car. they do not know what led to the shooting or who fired the shots. detectives are looking at surveillance video from the area. we are not sure of how many suspects, if we are looking at one or several that are responsible for the shooting. judy salamon is from canada but lived in oakland for decades. her friends say she already animals and would walk neighborhood dogs. >> new details about the sale boat skipper who led the coast guard on a chase over the weekend. this is abc7 news video of we the man being arrested on sunday facing charges of sending out a false difficulties stress call, failing to stop the boat in response to orders and assaulting an officer. he told officers that any attempt to board his vessel was an act of war. he has passports from new zealand and ireland and

oakland police are expanding their search for missing oakland toddler daphne viola webb. her father has been arrested for child endangerment and is being held on 100-thousand dollars bail. authorities continue to actively search for the 21- month-old girl who went missing wednesday. they were handing out flyers a gazhalee's supermarket, which is where the child was last seen. there have been two locations that police are focusing their searches on. the first is martin luther king jr. regional shoreline park, which is a place daphne and her father visited frequently. and the other location is the toddlers home which she was sharing with her father and grandmother. the little girl's disappearance has left a lot of unanswered questions. .following up on and police sent a boat with sonar capability to the park but were unable to launch into the water because the tide was too high. they will try again sometime this morning. and the toddler's father will face a judge for the first time today. he was arrested yesterday on charges of child endangerment for leaving his young daugh
