officers are turning their attention to the city's mayor who gave city workers the green light to participate in these protests while telling the police to beef up. the president of the oakland police officers associationthis mayor has said to the city workers go on out there and join the crowd wednesday if you like. then said to the police, beef up your presence and make sure you keep law and order. in the meantime we wind up with three officers injured. another one bitten. protesters pelting the police with rocks and bottles and other items including a sledgehammer, a bike lock and a chisel. to all of this you say what? >> the messaging was incorrect. we were told to -- the city was told they could take the day off. every city employee except the email to the police officers that the days off were canceled and we would be watching this protest. and that's what we were told to do. megyn: do you feel you were thrown to the wolves a bit by the mayor? while this protest started off as peaceful and many of the occupy protesters say they wanted it to be peaceful. but some were not. >> absolutely. we were made out to be the bad guys. we were sit for failure and that's why we wrote a letter to our citizens o

. >> mayor quan also made a point to commend oakland police officers for their work today. that's after the police officers' association released a scathing letter yesterday which criticized her lack of direction and leadership in handling the occupy oakland protest. >>> the protest has been mostly peaceful as we've been telling you. as you can see from a few of these picture, there has been some vapped limp by small frups -- vandalism by small groups windows smashed at banks in downtown oakland. many of these banks didn't even open today for business. some of the protestors also took aim at the whole foods store at harrison and 27th, throwing chairs and using spray paint. there are a lot of instances of protestors, including this one, where they were self-policing, trying to keep today's march and demonstrations peaceful. our internet reporter kim ber-sakamoto post aid video which shows just that. >> reporter: you can see two people dressed in black spray painting the word strike on a whole foods building. one walks away and and quickly tackled by a man trying to detain that person. the scene does become a little chao

the police officers association basically says that the mayor has thrown police officers under the bus. now, tonight as demonstrators prepare to take to the streets of oakland by the thousands, the union says the city's lack of leadership has led to a nightmare of a situation. now, these protesters plan to take to the streets by the thousands. they're expecting about 10,000 people to demonstrate tomorrow. they plan to stage sit ins at banks and corporations. they also plan to march to the court of oakland and shut operations down there. police are worried about what will happen tomorrow. >> the oakland police department as always is committed to facilitating peaceful expression of first amendment rights. they will be facilitating marchs downtown and elsewhere. >> reporter: the city of oakland says it's prepared for tomorrow's general strike. but on the eve of the day of action, the head of the police officer's association says he's not so sure that's the case. >> this is situation has become so confusing. >> reporter: says police officers are confused about how the mayor and the city have handled the demonstrations. ordering them to clear out the plaza then
