he's destroyed his ability to beat barack obama.wed up for barack obama than showed up for the republicans, that's because of the negative campaigning that's been going on. let me put this calculation on the table. the hurdle for newt gingrich or rick santorum to catch up with mitt romney is only equalled by the hurdle of mitt romney to arrive at the convention with the proper number of delegates. it is not in rick santorum's interest to drop out of this race. it's in his interest for newt to stay in the race and collect as many delegates as rick should do to keep mitt romney from getting the requisite number of delegates to arrive in tampa. in doing that, after the first ballot which mitt romney will fail to win, then rick santorum would have a genuine chance at winning an open floor fight. he doesn't have a chance otherwise, he has no ability to beat mitt romney and his organization and his money. >> rick -- i just have to follow up with that. of course he has the ability to be -- you look at michigan, ohio, romney bombed santorum

the obama administration said. and the obama administration was correct, these were not in the final deal. but nor were they in obama's letter to the brazilians and too the turks three weeks earlier. this created a significant problem between the united states and turkey and brazil. but what it also showed is that at the end of the day diplomacy between the united states and the west and iran actually hadn't failed. it had been abandoned. the success actually came, but it came six months too late. but by that time the political space of the administration, according to one obama official that i interviewed, had essentially run out. congress was coming at the administration like a steam roller, and there was a very legitimate fear in the obama administration. if they did not agree to rejecting the turkish/brazilian deal and by that forgoing the u.n. security council sanctions, then congress would pass its own sanctions, and that would have created a significant conflict between the states permanent five at the u.n.

the obama campaign looked at that and thought, this is a problem. that's the humanity we've not seen in hillary clinton in the last year. they saw it immediately as something that could change the momentum dramatically, and that's what happened. even leading up to the very day of the primary vote, most reporters on the ground still thought that barack obama was going to win that primary. the people around barack obama thought he was going to win the primary. even the people around hillary clinton thought that. the only exceptions to that rule really were bill clinton and hillary clinton who as they were campaigning over the course of those last 72 hours, they felt like they could feel something shifting in the electorate. bill clinton new politics in the new hampshire better than any place on the planet. everywhere they went he felt the tide turning. they were the only ones who weren't completely surprised when she won that victory. she bounced out of new hampshire with one of the most remarkable comebacks anybody has seen in presidential politics.

obama defeated mr. mccain by a substantial margin so it doesn't really matter how long the primary process goes. and it is easy to see why mitt romney is having a hard time nailing down the nomination. 40% of americans describe themselves as conservative. most of those folks will vote for the most conservative candidate which happens to be rick santorum. so that's why these votes are close. senator santorum is a very big advantage in conservative states like oklahoma. looking ahead, anything could happen in the general election next fall. it should come down to the economy, including gas prices. also, there could be a showdown with iran and that could influence the vote as well. right now, both the president and the republic candidate, whoever it is. are pretty much even. the election could go either way. in the meantime, alabama, mississippi, and kansas are coming up next. santorum and gingrich should do fairly well in those conservative states. so mitt romney will likely take more lumps as he continue
