i sense that unity between the bush and obama administrations with obama strengthening the sanctions regime. then he got to negotiations over the last year and a half and these were extraordinarily difficult negotiations, if you think about it, charlie. on the one hand, we had to open up the first sustained conversation between the u.s. and iran in 35 years. we basically had no sustained vindication until the autumn of 2013. so you had that dynamic and the political sensitivity between tehran and washington. and then there were other individuals at the negotiating table, and that was russia and china, and they are not easy to deal with, as i know from many years ago. finally, he had to deal with this difficult political environment in washington and the climate of distrust of this administration by many republican leaders, so it was as if the president and secretary kerry were in a three ring circus, and i give them credit for having persisted, and i can't imagine with john kerry, with his broken leg, 18 days in vienna showing strength. my hat is off to the american team. charlie: so

can you react to president obama's speech yesterday? what you found was most cutting edge of that what he said? did anything surprise you? and what are you doing? >> worst of all, it is good to be back. we have ability for a couple of years -- first of all, it is good to be back. we haven't been with you for a couple of years. i want to say the president speech was courageous, but it wasn't as courageous as it might have been even two or three years ago. we're in the middle of a very rare convergence -- both political parties, republicans and democrats, were stuck on stupid for 30 years, chasing each other off a cliff to put more and more people in prison. the way you showed your smart politician was you tried to one of your opponent on how many people you wanted to put behind bars for petty offenses. three strikes and you're out two strikes you are out, hey, if you're black, you're out. that became politics for both parties. bill clinton was a mass incarcerated. over the past years, building momentum in both parties -- you both parties

[applause] president obama: most u.s. trade is within three countries in africa -- south africa, and injuria, and angola. much of that is in the form of energy. we are increasing trade with tanzania ethiopia, mozambique. we are helping more africans get the goods to market. next year we will host another u.s.-africa business forum, to mobilize billions of dollars in new trade and investment. so that we are buying more of each other's products. now, the united states is not the only country that sees your growth as an opportunity, and that is a good thing. when more countries invest responsibly in africa, it creates more jobs and prosperity for us all. i want to encourage everybody to do business with africa. african countries should want to do business with every country. but economic relationships cannot simply be about building countries' infrastructure with foreign labor for extracting africa's natural resources. real economic partnership has to be a good deal for africa. that is to create jobs and capacity for africa.

[indiscernible] it's a very significant and symbolic visit from the u.s. to come to kenya. anchor: we understand the security is extra high there in kenya. do you get the sense that the president is a man in danger in the country? reporter: it's a difficult question to answer. i think he is as safe here is if he would be if he was in the united states flag by his security personnel. there has been a lot of security detail that has been assigned to him. a lot of measures have been put in place to make sure not only is he safe, but everybody who is attending the summit tomorrow as well. anchor: thank you very much. staying in africa, burundi's president has been reelected to a third term. the country's election commission said he won over 69% of the
