president obama: donald trump is uniquely unqualified to be president. mr. trump: the rise of isis is the direct result of policy decisions made by president obama. president obama: and then suddenly he is going to be the champion of working people? come on! come on, man. jon: but there are serious policy issues where donald trump is determined to rip up what his predecessor put in place. the affordable care act, the signature policy achievement of the barack obama years, known as obamacare, gave health insurance to millions more americans, but is hated by huge numbers because premiums have soared and coverage worsened. donald trump has pledged to repeal and replace it, though with what is unknown. enormous amounts of time and effort have been spent on comprehensive trade deals with asia and europe. both of those will be dead in the water under a trump presidency. obama also invested a lot of political capital in the climate change deal signed in paris by world leaders, which only came into force a few days ago. but donald trump has previously said climate c

but what president obama is well, what s -- president obama is committed to is an effective transition that helps bring president elect trump and his team up to speed on the current status of u.s. policy, including foreign policy. and there is a long tradition of presidents -- even presidents in different parties -- seeking to preserve some measure of continuity, particularly where those interests align. i wouldn't predict at this point how all that shakes out. the one thing that i would point out is that there are the n situations where downside of unilaterally withdrawing from some of these international agreements is significant. so the consequences, for example, with the iran deal of the g out, you do risk iranians trying to break out. at the same time, there's also a u.n. security council resolution that applies to this agreement. that means this agreement is something that is supported by -- llies but alleges by also by russia. i think that could be a good indication of how united the international community is behind this agreement. and president-elect trump will have to decide

president obama out there. there has been no greater ambassador to the world for the future trump administration than current president obama. listen to what the president said yesterday. >> i also think that he is coming to this office with fewer set hard and fast policy prescriptions. i don't think he is ideological. i think ultimately, he is pragmatic in that way. and that can serve him well. as long as he's got good people around him and he has a clear sense of direction. >> president obama has always said he respected how george w. bush left office. this is that on steroids to quote ellis henican a moment ago. he would not take the bait on steve bannon yesterday. >> i'll give you two theories. one, he is giving the incoming president a name to live up to. thinking donald trump doesn't know how to be president. and if barack obama can be a mentor, maybe he can influence him. the other explanation is that maybe obama said this guy is so different from me. i want to show this difference and emphasize how it is

i know when president obama was running for president. there were occasions when members of the team consulted with representatives of other governments. i don't think there is anything nefarious about that. i can't speak to the conversations content that may have occurred. i don't think i can pass judgment. >> the president mentioned that difficulty from the foreign policy stage was discussed. did the president want to convey anything in particular what is going on in mosul and iraq and base information that might or might not be be of or sufficiently appreciated. in the last two weeks, president-elect describing what was going on in mosul as a abject disaster. i know know that is not your persuasion. did the president talk about stuff he must know. >> the president felt obligated to touch on important foreign policy. and the ongoing campaign against isil in iraq and syria are important foreign policy proprietaries. i don't know what extent that was discussed and this is something that president obama is following closely. >> you said th

you're a former senior adviser to president obama. w do you think he approached this important meeting? >> i think as we said yesterday, wolf, he had very much in mind his own meeting with george w. bush in 2008. remember, the president was pretty tough on president bush during his campaign. and yet, president bush welcomed him to the white house, held a luncheon with all the former presidents at president obama's request. all of his aides briefed all of us, and there was an ongoing dialogue throughout the transition months. he was determined, i know, to do the same thing for whomever was elected. and in some ways, he felt that it was even more important when someone of an opposing party was elected, because this is the responsibility of a president in our democratic system. >> certainly is. gloria, considering their history over these past few months of the campaign, over the past several years, the two of them seem pretty warm, i don't know about friendly, but they seemed very, very polite. >> i think they were polite to each other,

in 2004, 59% of the country and by 2008 when president barack obama is running for president two election cycles ago that number was 54%. today that number is 45%. it was 47% in 2014 and the latest data shows that 45% so just during the last election cycle during president barack obama's presidency we have crossed this amazing threshold. we have moved from being a majority white christian country to a minority white christian country in a short amount of time. this is in fact even if people don't know the stats that while i think many white christians particularly white conservative christians feel the shift in their bones. this is part of the react to do we are seeing. just to put one more symbolic issue across the same time period support for marriage over the same period of time. again go back to 2008. what you see is that only four in 10 americans supported marriage when barack obama was running for president 2008 in that number today is 53% so similarly we have gone from a country from where a minority supports same-sex marriage to a majority supports same-sex marriage. c you can wat

president obama admired that. but look, i can't make any promises now for what exactly president obama will do once he leaves office. >> in the next 70-some odd days is there a strategy that the white house has, the president has, to try to preserve and protect certain aspects of what he's accomplished here? what are the priorities? >> well, i think the first priority is insuring the smooth and transition. but there's also the priority that the president places on making sure as the chief of staff likes to say, is we run through the tape. that the president and his team use every moment that's remaining to do the work of the american people and to effectively implement the kinds of policies that president obama has priorized over the course of his presidency. >> what are some of those priorities now, given the change of administration, given the fact that donald trump has won the presidency. what specifically is the focus? what are the priorities? >> i don't know that i can give a comprehensive list of some of the
