nbc bay area's monty francis is at ocean beach with an update. hopefully they safe, monty. >> reporter: good evening. a total of six surfers were reported to be in distress here at ocean beach this afternoon. the good news is they are all okay, although one of them did suffer a minor shoulder injury. now the surf was unusually strong and strong rip currents caused a coast guard to come through and ask all the surfers to paddle in because it was too dangerous. as for the six surfers in distress, they all made it in on their own. a coast guard helicopter was about to hoist one of them out of the water near seal rock, but he, too, was finally able to make it to shore independently. a nature photographer caught some of the scary moments for those surfers this afternoon. he shared his photos with us. again, no one was seriously hurt. again, all of this is happening on the eve of the big mavericks surf contest off the coast of half moon bay. professional surfers have come to the bay area from all over the world to compete. >> surfers are going to have

so yesterday we had an opportunity to go out and see a shock trauma platoon set up on ocean beach, had them running demonstrations and asking questions of the doctors and nurses there. we also saw a landing craft on the beach. yes, it can bring a tractor, it can bring personnel, it can also evacuate patients. it can also bring resources that we otherwise wouldn't be able to get into the city. general spies has said it many times, they have the ability to go around, over, i think through was one of those as well, any of the obstacles we find in our way. that's a resource we in san francisco really have to capitalize on. as i look at all these things, frankly i just was talking to somebody this morning, this is like the toy store of resources for me. when you sit on this ship, you look around, yes, it's a ship, it carries helicopters. it is so much more than that. it's a platform that does so many things. it's like your i phone. you ask it what you want it to do and there's probably an app for that. and that's the beauty of it. it's a multi use platform when we started to engage these ki

from mount tamalpais we are looking down to ocean beach and it is nice with a bit of a breeze at 2,600'. but it is another "spare the air" day. we are waiting for the next storm to come in, but it could be a while, with dry air right now. this morning we had a lot of frost. look at the 20's, fairfield, concord, napa, sonoma, novato, we had 32 around san jose so the temperatures there were also getting close to that frosty level. now, right now we are in the 40's in santa rosa and fairfield and everyone else low-to-mid 50's and san francisco is 58 and already 63 at half moon bay and monterey at 60, and santa cruz is cooler at 52. more warming today, more poor air quality and this will continue all the way through the weekend and more likely we will have more "spare the air" days with rough surf that will build through the weekend when it climaxes on sunday. our next rain is possibly next week. if we do not get it next week, it could be next month. now, what is happening today, san francisco is 63 and the same as yesterday, and 1 degrees to 4 degrees warmer from concord to fremont, above

the wind blows, it comes from the ocean beach. because the sand is moving, you can see evidence along this side of the hill in 1989. the vibrations in accelerated. you have a significant amount of movement to the point that the homes that uc had very severe damage for two blocks. we recognized what the problem was at the time, it was a matter of loose sand on a very steep slope. thank you for the effort. we were able to get federal funding and design which you see in the upper walls. the lower walls was actually billed as part of the wpa. the upper wall was built in 1991-'92. this is a concrete wall and it has rocked going through the wall that extends the distance of 80 feet beyond the wall. the next earthquake occurs, the wall is designed to resist and the movement of the sand and allowed it to move down hill. this is a classic example of the creek and degree flow and exists all the way the area. we might see the other evidence. we have done nothing to improve the quality and the strength of the dam. >> one of the things that ha
