nbc bay area's monty francis is at ocean beach with an update. hopefully they safe, monty. >> reporter: good evening. a total of six surfers were reported to be in distress here at ocean beach this afternoon. the good news is they are all okay, although one of them did suffer a minor shoulder injury. now the surf was unusually strong and strong rip currents caused a coast guard to come through and ask all the surfers to paddle in because it was too dangerous. as for the six surfers in distress, they all made it in on their own. a coast guard helicopter was about to hoist one of them out of the water near seal rock, but he, too, was finally able to make it to shore independently. a nature photographer caught some of the scary moments for those surfers this afternoon. he shared his photos with us. again, no one was seriously hurt. again, all of this is happening on the eve of the big mavericks surf contest off the coast of half moon bay. professional surfers have come to the bay area from all over the world to compete. >> surfers are going to have

beach. and never have your back to an angry ocean. we have a lot of beach statements that have been issued because of the hazardous seas. good evening. let's share with you what the mavericks forecast looks like. today it was 66 degrees at half moon bay. tomorrow 64, bright sunshine. waves up to 20 feet. the rip current risk is high and off shore wind will continue to 15 miles per hour. monday for the holiday, more sunshine at 62 degrees and again that rip current risk remains on the high side. and speaking of high temperatures today, what a difference a day makes. for the first time this year, we saw 70 degrees across the bay area and that was in oakland. but it was 73 in santa cruz. above average in san jose. average high 57 in santa rosa but instead 65. and livermore and fairfield and concord are the cool spot at 60. currently we have 39 degrees already in livermore. we'll have to double check that. 39 also in santa rosa where the winds are still calm at this hour. we're dropping down to the freezing point again in livermore. in fac

that's exactly what caused some trouble for surfers here at ocean beach today and also at dylan beachn marin. all of the surfers are okay tonight. a coast guard helicopter hovered near seal rock this afternoon and a rescue diver was just about to deploy when a a surfer caught by a rip current was finally able to paddle himself to shore. he was one of six surfers caught by the rip currents at ocean beach today. a nation photographer snapped a few shots as some of the surfers made their way back to safety, all unhurt except for one, who suffered a minor shoulder injury. the swells that spell trouble for amateurs are precisely what the professionals have traveled from all over the world to experience. at half moon bay the tents are up and organizers say this year's mavericks international surf contest will produce monster waves, powerful and dangerous. >> the surfers are going to have challenging conditions out there. the waves are going to stand up really, really tall and throw out really quick. it's going to be a challenge for the guys. >> reporter: the founder of the maverick surf con

monte francis is at ocean beach with an update. hopefully they're okay, monte. >> that is the good news. they are all okay. we have a car horn going off here, we apologize for that. total of six surfers, they got into some kind of distress here today. the good news, they're all okay. one of them suffered a minor injury. the conditions were rough earlier today. as you can see behind me, it's calmed down considerly. the coast guard came through on a life boat earlier and told the surfers to paddle in all of this on the eve of the maverick surf contest. professional surfers have come to the bay area from all over the world to compete. the surf can be treacherous for even the pros, and there are warnings for spectators not to get too close to the water. organizers set up a big tv screen a safe distance from shore so people can see the action. we talked to the head judge for mavericks who described the conditions the surfers will be up against tomorrow. >> we were waiting so long, didn't have an event last year. everybody is anxious for

so yesterday we had an opportunity to go out and see a shock trauma platoon set up on ocean beach, had them running demonstrations and asking questions of the doctors and nurses there. we also saw a landing craft on the beach. yes, it can bring a tractor, it can bring personnel, it can also evacuate patients. it can also bring resources that we otherwise wouldn't be able to get into the city. general spies has said it many times, they have the ability to go around, over, i think through was one of those as well, any of the obstacles we find in our way. that's a resource we in san francisco really have to capitalize on. as i look at all these things, frankly i just was talking to somebody this morning, this is like the toy store of resources for me. when you sit on this ship, you look around, yes, it's a ship, it carries helicopters. it is so much more than that. it's a platform that does so many things. it's like your i phone. you ask it what you want it to do and there's probably an app for that. and that's the beauty of it. it's a multi use platform when we started to engage these ki

beaches through the weekend. there is a high surf advisory in effect now till sunday afternoon. the u.s. coastguard is issuing a warning to surfers and anyone near the ocean this weekend. ktvu's jade hernandez is live at rodeo beach in marin county. >> reporter: surfers experienced fair surf conditions here at rodeo beach. to give you an idea just how high those waves got out there, they came to about my waist and i'm 5' 4. this weekend those waves are expected to surge above my head. here at ocean beach waves reached at their peak 3 to 4 feet, but ocean waters along the coast could hit to 5 to 8 feet this weekend. that's head high to 3 feet above. up near point ray's national seashore waves could swell 8 to 10 feet. we got surfer pete schmidt taking advantage of 2-foot waves. >> everybody is really happy just because there hasn't been any waves the past three days. >> reporter: but the u.s. coastguard has seen what treacherous sneaker waves can do. >> the ocean is not forgiving. >> reporter: the first day of 2013 at point reyes national seashore a husband and wife were caught in a strong wave walking their dog on the beach. the husband didn't survive. la

the wind blows, it comes from the ocean beach. because the sand is moving, you can see evidence along this side of the hill in 1989. the vibrations in accelerated. you have a significant amount of movement to the point that the homes that uc had very severe damage for two blocks. we recognized what the problem was at the time, it was a matter of loose sand on a very steep slope. thank you for the effort. we were able to get federal funding and design which you see in the upper walls. the lower walls was actually billed as part of the wpa. the upper wall was built in 1991-'92. this is a concrete wall and it has rocked going through the wall that extends the distance of 80 feet beyond the wall. the next earthquake occurs, the wall is designed to resist and the movement of the sand and allowed it to move down hill. this is a classic example of the creek and degree flow and exists all the way the area. we might see the other evidence. we have done nothing to improve the quality and the strength of the dam. >> one of the things that ha
