nbc bay area's chuck coppola is live at san francisco's ocean beach. and chuck, it looks very, very scary out there. what are lifeguards saying? >> reporter: well, it was very harrowing, too, to watch. at one point the surf was so high, coast guard vessels we were watching practically disappeared under the spray as the waves crested over them. and a swimmer as part of this mock rescue was carried away from the rescuers. the current was that swift. it was all part of a drill prompted by a number of recent drownings along the coast. breakers off ocean beach pitched a 47-foot coast guard boat skyward as rescuers hovered overhead. a dramatic rescue demonstration against the powerful backdrop of the stormy west pacific. >> we've had folks swept out, young, old, championship swimmers swept out, surfers. >> reporter: eight people have been swept out to sea since el nino conditions began. from santa cruz to pacifica to the rocks off land's end in san francisco and further to marin. five rescued in time but just barely. still, it's led to three drownings in les

half moon bay, ocean beach, montero with swells anywhere from 7 to 10 feet. wave height currently. so pretty dangerous out there. boy, it's going to be beautiful at the beaches for the next several days, but strong rip currents and very large breakers. let's take a look at the week ahead, jumping forward. look, not a chance of rain. full sunshine, record warmth, and perhaps by the end of the week we may see one system that wants to bring us some showers. the forecast models are not agreeing on that. records, here we go on monday. san francisco would have to make 74, oakland 77, san jose would have to see 75. and this is what we are forecasting. low 70s in oakland. 74 hayward. and san jose in the 70s. we cool off in some spots on tuesday the and certainly by wednesday numbers coming down just a little bit. but still, above normal. so speaking of san jose, you see the 73 on wednesday. it stays mild. if we take the next seven days, looking at the numbers continuing to climb. here, the records. and then it's a little bit of a decline there by the end of the work

vic lee is live at ocean beach with her story. vic? >> reporter: kristen, the message that first responders want to send is simple -- just don't go swimming out of in the waters out there. don't even go wadding. even six inches of moving water can take a person down because of the strong undertow and that's sadly what happened to larry moore on tuesday. the waves today were big and rough. the coast guard choppers seemed to come out of nowhere. >> he gave his life for me. >> reporter: on tuesday, 63-year-old claudia moore lost her husband, larry. they had been walking along the beach. she decided to wade out into the water. >> and suddenly, there were three, four huge waves. the third one was up to my hips and the sand was gone under me and i fell. it was like 200, 300 pound men pushing you down and it sucked me under. i know that's when he ran after me. >> reporter: the riptides were too much for 61-year-old larry moore, a physically strong man. >> there's just no way even a strong man can get through that. >> reporter: the coast guard

yesterday a swimmer had to be rescued at ocean beach near lincoln way. a coast guard helicopter doing training in the area was the one to notice him in the water. the swimmer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. >>> the homeless man accused of stabbing a chp officer in san francisco is due back in court today to try to get bail reduced. he's suspected of using a knife to slash him on his neck and arm. it happened near a homeless encampment on the onramp to the bay bridge. the officer is now recovering. and the suspect is being held on $5 million bail. >>> the serial stowaway was back in court yesterday. a judge hoped to never see her in his courtroom again. she had been ordered to stay away from chicago airports and was caught at a bus shelter outside o'hare last week. she's been arrested a number of other times for trying to sneak on planes at airports across the country including in san francisco at sfo and san jose mineta airport. the judge scheduled another hearing for next week to try to figure out how to help hartman. >>> a judge i
