it came out of oceania naval air station not far away. it is a training squadron there, so the assumption at this point clearly is it was on some sort of a training mission with two crew on board. they fly through this area very regularly. they fly flight paths that are very well understood of course by civilian aircraft in the region. and the navy has been down in this residential area of virginia beach for decades. operating both aircraft and their ships. u.s. air force is nearby. u.s. marine corps. this is an area of virginia in southern virginia along the coastline that is heavily populated by military installations, by military families. lots of deployments out of this area. pilots having served overseas for the last ten years. so this is a community that is very well tied to the u.s. military. it's a real economic life line i would say for virginia beach. you also see a lot of retired military, a lot of veterans living in this community area in virginia beach. looks from everything we're seeing on our air, all of us right now as you

oceania is a heavily populated area, we see this residential area, and many years ago the base closuression t part of the federal government that tries to look at shutting down military bases had warned about development around oceanea. this was back in 2003, 2005, they had warned that development was getting close to the airfield and the military and the pentagon would have to think about moving the fighter squadron. a lot of poll fiitics came into play, maybe economic development would be hurt in the community. politics won out, many will tell you and the squadron stayed. this is a continuing problem across the country these days. there is enroachment, there is. >> na >>. >> hitting home this, kind of incident, this kind of mishap is very rare, what is the track record for some of these training exercises, some of these planes coming out of oceania, it must be very rare. >> i was thinking back, the last thing i can remember was in southern california, i believe in san diego, i believe it was a marine corps aircraft also ran into trouble very quickly in the air and it crashed into a h

i lived about three miles from the crash site for 21 years in the flight path of naval oceania air station. you're used to the sound of freedom of those aircraft. i can only tell you for the last seven years since the 2005 process went through that we have constantly put state money and local money into this area to be able to reduce encroachment around the oceania naval air station to buy up property so that we could move people back from the area around the air station, itself. i put another $7.5 million into the budget this year for that. we're trying to do everything we can to reduce the proximity around the air station. but everybody knows that occasionally with naval aviation that accidents do happen. fortunately, we haven't had a significant incident in years and years so this is a tragedy today but, fortunately, the great work of the pilots and the response crew have really lessened the impact so far. >> virginia governor bob mcdonald. governor mcdonald, thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. >> okay, jim. thank you very much. >>> and we have just in from howard university som
