we are in the 3,000 block of long beach road in oceanside. they are trying to put out areas of fire. it is still smoking. take a look at the video taken this morning. when they arrived there was heavy fire from the back of the second floor. they went to work but had to pull out of the building due to a collapse in the back part. 40 minutes into the fire it went to a second alarm. it has taken out most of the block damaging several stores and apartments above them. we did speak to the owner of the apartment building where he got the call about 4:30 this morning that his building was on fire. >> my building is completely gone it looks like. >> everybody is safe. that is a good sign. >> that's the important thing. the fire department is still trying to douse the flames here. clearly taken out most of the block. the good news this morning, no one was injured. all of the residents were able to get out. none of them were harmed. not even a firefighter, even with the collapse and serious situation they had when they first arrived earlier this mornin

it happened on long beach road in oceanside tonight. we are learning police say a former nypd officer is to blame. greg cergol at the scene to tell us how this happened. greg? >> reporter: it appears this was just a routine trip to the podiatrist. a 77-year-old retired police officer meeting his doctor. for some unexplained reason that revolved around the officer's handgun. by late afternoon we found business as usual at the office of podiatrist matthew nist ester. but the doctor himself was in the hospital nursing, you guessed it, a foot wound. all the reason being the officer brought a gun into the office. nassau police say the same shot wounded not only the doctor, but also the gun's owner, a retired nypd officer. >> it's crazy. i just think it's crazy that somebody would bring a gun to a doctor's office and show it off like it's show and tell. >> reporter: it appears the gun fired accidentally, and police say there appears to be no criminality. people inside the doctor's office refused comment, but pearl steen, who herself is a pati
