getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of the them. >> i'd like to punch them in the face. >> he argues the effects is to overpower reason. he compares it to the person trying to ride an grow and hope. >> i end tonight where it all began for me. i still believe in a place called hope. >> never been more hopeful about our future. i've never been more hopeful about america. i ask you to sustain that hope. >> those emotion maal appeals w from winners. there or others who were perceived as focusing on competency and they lost the presidential race. president trump isn't just rattling people with raw emotion. he's tapping into these deeper feelings and fears which aren't about chosing between different outcomes but sometimes eliciting reaction that are uncontrollable of people around the country. explain what you mean by emotion towards anger. >> well, we have two selves. we have as you pointed out in your intro, we have the rider, that's the rational self and then we have the elephant. it's dominanting our behavior. the elephant is the fear driven part of ourself who is is at great odds with what we think we are. a world in which a guy like trump is playing on fear all the time, what he's doing is stirring up the elephant and in his own behavior, he's normalizing the reactivity that we see in the world. i was thinking today about the famous book about the ikeman trial. her point is the main fear you have is to normalize this kind of behavior. what happen s our brains, we use our brains. we misuse our brains to rationalize the worst behaviors we are guilty of. we reactively do. >> it seems your pinpointing two things. the power of anger in a modern society that thinks it may have basically handled some of this but, two, a kind of vanity if we think we're better than this then we're not going to be as ready to spot it when it happens. >> that's absolutely right. we think that we are way more evolved than we actually are. the ability to step back and watch yourself, particularly watch the activation of your own body when you're feeling a sense of danger or threat and that anger or that frustration or that fear starts to arrive. to be able to watch that. trump is providing an object lesson for every one in whatnot to do. what we need to be able to do is make that leap to get away from that vanity, from that hubris. >> let's tyke thake that to the big debate. michael wolf made a very concise defense of his book that's highly disturbing, if you believe in facts. take a look. >> my evidence is the book. read the book. if it make sense to you, if it rings true it is true. >> if it rings true to you, it is true. >> i mean that is a disturbing comment to make. we do act on that asujs. if something feels right, we assume it is right. if we don't misuse reason to rationalize after the fact rkts if we use reason to cut through the emotion then it becomes our ally. we need to be able to stand back, to take a deal breath, to feel our feet and to ask ourselves these ourselves these reflective questions as opposed to simply descending to the reaction that trump wants us to, and that he has normalized and that he has made every day in our lives. >> right. when you say it that way, it's important because that's not just about judging other people with whom you might disagree. let's seeing in the wolfe case a confirmationing to problem of what they actually are willing to do, in terms of denuclearization and in terms of what secretary of state pompeo constantly refers to as irreversible and verifiable denuclearization. so, it's not as if other presidents couldn't have done this. it's that they didn't want to. that's the big difference here. >> so back to my question about what the u.s. has conceded. so no joint military exercises with south korea, that's an interesting one because those are what gave south korea some feeling of security. >> right. >> now they may feel more precarious in this new situation. >> although they have been pushing for this more than anyone, to be fair to president trump. president moon and the south korean government has been pushing for this summit. they are the ones who really led the way on this. so, i've seen some reporting this morning that the south koreans, not all of them necessarily in the government, knew about this pledge to cancel this joint military exercise. that said, i don't believe that we're going to hear any word of concern from south korea. they have really been pushing for this the whole time. >> we just got a message in here from barbara starr, our pentagon reporter, who said that there were joint military exercises scheduled for august, this summer, between south korea and the u.s. i don't know, i guess those have been cancelled for the moment. >> what was unusual hearing president trump describe those joint military exercises as provocative. that's a word that the north koreans would use about this military exercises. now, it's true that in the name of peace it's probably a good gesture to cancel these or at least not do them in august, but by the same token -- and he did hold out the possibility that they'll return if future negotiations aren't going the way he wants them to. but it is a significant concession. and it's interesting for the president of the united states to refer to u.s. south korean joint military exercises as provocative because really that's the point of the view of the north korean. >> so also, you know, bonding with a north korean dictator does require some level of putting blinders on to the human rights abuses. >> sure. horrific how many rights abuses. they have goologues. more than 100,000 north koreans locked up for their political views and their families with them. obviously otto warmbier the american student who allegedly vandalized something is now dead because of north korean human rights abuses. >> look, president trump talked about that. he said he felt that it was otto warmbier, that moment that tredy is what sort of broke the damn. he credited otto warmbier being the tipping point here, whether that is true or not, that's how he interpreted it. >> it's a nice sentiment and i believe that his feelings are very heartfelt when it comes to the warmbier family, this is a despotic regime. they abuse their people. it is almost unparalleled when it comes to the human rights abuses that the north korean government imposes upon its people. you know, i'm sure you've seen north koreans and south koreans in terms of the starvation of the north koreans. south koreans, i think, are the average south korean is taller, weighs more and obviously it's the same people. >> yeah. president trump was asked about those human rights abuses at the press conference. so listen to this. >> the man you met today, kim jong-un, as you know, has killed family members, has starved his own people, is responsible for the death of otto warmbier. why are you so comfortable calling him very talented? >> well, he is very talented. anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough. >> what do you, president trump, expect him kim jong-un to do with the human rights abuses with regard to the north korean people? >> it was discussed. it was discussed little compared to the denuclearization that's where we started and where we ended. but they will be doing things. and i think he wants to do things. i think he wants to -- you would be very surprised. very smart. very good negotiator. wants to do the right thing. and i believe it's a rough situation over there. there's no question about it. and we did discuss it today pretty strongly. i mean, knowing what the main purpose of what we were doing is, denucing but discussed at pretty good length. we'll be doing something on it. it's rough. it's rough in a lotf places, by the way. >> so interesting to hear how he frames kim jong-un. he took over this situation at 26 and ran it. i mean, it's hard not to hear some level of projection when the president talks like that. >> well, there are two things going on here, i think. first of all, he is trying to negotiate peace. so, you have to take that into consideration with how he's talking about this dispottic dictator, right? he's trying to achieve peace. you're not going to go and be candid how horrible he has been. but beyond that, there is a whole -- there are years worth of words that the president has given when it comes to praise for autocrats and criticism of people who run democracies. and it is just a matter of fact he has said -- he praised the leaders of china for putting down the tiananmen square massacre as strong. i asked him about that during a debate years ago. he just has an admiration for autocrats seemingly, at least based on the adjectives he selects, that you can't get away from. but that said, i do view this in the context of him trying to be diplomatic about somebody he's trying to negotiate peace with. >> fair enough. we'll talk about the feeling of the allies, if you'll stick around. >> i will, of course. >> thank you very much. >>> that was very odd for people who know how this normally goes down. then there was the decision that he made just days before the election to alert members of congress which, let's be honest, is basically going public with something, that there were more e-mails found on anthony weiner's computer, hillary clinton e-mails, that could be of concern that many democrats say that's what cost the election, debatable. how significant is this? >> i think when you take a look at comey's statement there, it is fascinating, he says no reasonable prosecutor. he's not a prosecutor. he's head of the fbi. that really highlights what an unusual situation that was for him to be delivering that news at that time without going through the doj -- without going through the attorney general lynch at that time. >> doesn't surprise you that this is something that the inspector general, the independent inspector general is taking issue with? >> no. that's a very long tradition when i was at justice, very cognizant of that issue, not saying anything about an investigation that could interfe interfere, too close to election. i think that horowitz will take a close look at that and will be quite critical. >> that's what the ig is going to say, hello, should have known this, you did know this, you were made aware. >> absolutely. comey, in many public statements, talks about how he wrestled with that issue, he was the loser of that wrestling match. >> loretta lynch, she was the attorney general at the time, and during the election, bill clinton on the tarmac in arizona, goes up into her plane, they have a chat for a considerable period of time considering the former president's wife was being looked at for her e-mail practices. she, along with andrew mccabe, the number two at the department, he's criticized for lag time, right? there was an awareness that these e-mails were on anthony weiner's laptop in september and then they didn't get the warrant until late october. so these two are also going to be criticized, we understand. >> yeah, absolutely. i think for former ag lynch, a big concern is failure of leadership. i get the fact she had been burned by the tarmac conversation but she doubled down on that. with regard to mccabe, the big question is the timing. that's a great october surprise. and the question is going to be what intent was really going on there. >> could it have just been a september surprise?
