official reaction from washington and beyond has been mostly one sided against the president. in part because it's been radio silence from most republicans. just before trump posted this tweet, nebraska senator ben sass said on sunday that he's been troubled by the president's recent attacks on the news media. >> there's an important distinction to draw between bad stories or crappy coverage and the right that citizens have to argue and complain about that, and trying to weaponize distrust. the first amendment is the beating heart of the american amendment, and you can't separate that in there. >> kate collins is traveling with the president. >> reporter: democratic members of congress have wasted no time attacking the president after he tweeted a video of himself tackling a man with a cnn logo imposed on his head. house minority leader snowplows, "violence and violent imagery to bully the press must be rejected. this july 4th, celebrate freedom of the press, guardians to our democracy." congressman frank pallone echoed her sentiment saying, "donald trump with a threat to the

officials telling "the washington post" they know from american intelligence intercepts. if true, it's also possible that the russian ambassador was boasting to his bosses. but if it wasn't a boast, and the information bears out, it casts serious doubt on the credibility of jeff sessions, the highest law enforcement official in the land, who denied having any contacts with the russians during the campaign about the campaign. this is what attorney general sessions said during his confirmation hearing back in january. >> if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the trump campaign communicated with the russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do? >> senator franken, i'm not aware of any of those activities. i have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign, and i did not have communications with the russians. >> so that was january. when asked in a written question whether he had by in contact with anyone in the russian government about the 2016 election before or after election day, he responded no. you here's what he said

well, it's an official release, not a leak. or when this week anthony scaramucci talks about going to the f.b.i. or d.o.j. because somebody released his public financial disclosure report which says public at the top and has a discussion of the release mechanism. so these are ethical principles and the departure from them is every bit of a threat as any violation of a specific rule. there's also ethical norms. and i'm going to talk about why they're important a little bit later, but let's just talk about what they are. these ethical norms include the tradition that our modern presidents have followed in divesting their conflicts of interest. and that sets the tone from the top. when you don't do that you run into problems. we -- another example is with presidential nominees. the law of governing conflicts of interest that apply to them when they come into government is not a prohibitive holding statute. there are some but i am talking about the main primary conflicts of interest that apply to all of the nominees. and instead it

officials say they've been replenishing their ranks ever since the u.s. expelled 35 russian diplomats suspected of spying last december. in some cases, russian spies have tried to gain employment at places with sensitive information as part of their intelligence-gathering efforts. the fbi which is responsible for counterintelligence efforts in the u.s. would not comment for the story. the russian embassy in washington didn't respond to a request for comment. of course, all of this begs the question, why isn't the u.s. stopping it? there's a couple of reasons. partisan political disagreements over the russian activity, and president trump's reluctance to accept intelligence conclusions about russian shah's meddling in the election -- russia's meddling in the election has slowed efforts the former intelligence say. and fbi counterintelligence is seeking to keep an eye on activity. in some cases, the fbi uses surveillance to track the suspected russian intelligence officers as part of a counterintelligence effort. christine and missional? >> thanks to pamela
