has been the official memorial for the state of north carolina for world war ii since about 1962. the origin of the name was that there would be a line of these ships that would do battle with another country. these are the biggest ships. obviously now we have aircraft carriers instead of battleships, this is extreme. >> it was commissioned in 1941 just prior to pearl harbor. this was the first big battleship. shopd not built a battle -- battleship in 16 years. we started building ships, the big advantage that this ship had is that it is very fuel efficient. after pearl harbor we did not have many oil tankers in the vicinity. this ship and her sisters arrived just in time to support the military operations in the pacific. >> for the first time in 18 years, the united states commissions a new battleship, the north carolina. commissioned in the brooklyn navy yard. they take the ship out to the new york harbor and that is how it got the name show boat. it would keep putting out on trials, they needed to keep tweaking things. everybody in the city cap seeing this come and go. harbor h
