right now in ohio with 89% of precincts reporting, it's a blowout in ohio, the union stripping law hasn recalled. 39% of ohio voting yes against union rights tonight and 61% voting no to reinstate union rights. as soon as those results were announced, white house press secretary jay carney offered the president congratulations saying quote the president congratulates the people of ohio for standing up for workers and defeating efforts to strip-away collective bargaining rights and commenced teachers, firefighters, police officers and other workers who took a stand to defend those rights. bill burton the former press secretary for the president did as well tonight only with an eye toward 2012 presidential politics. bill burton writing from the outside group sporting the election, tonight, ohio voters rejected the republican vision for america that rewards big corporations and the wealthiest at the expense of middle class families. john kasich's agenda in ohio is a mirror of mitt romney's and finance more tax cuts for big corporations and the wealthiest. in 2012, voters won't have to gue

griff jenkins joins us live from columbus, ohio. griff?reporter: greta, i've just left minutes ago a press conference with governor kasich who appeared humbled, con great congratulating the folks who won. he said clearly the people have spoken, and that he needs to take a deep breath and really think about things and what this all means for ohio and his focus still being on jobs. as you mentioned, some of the other important voices on this i spoke with earlier today. take a listen. >> we sent these guys to office to create jobs, not to try to fight with workers or destroy our voice. this will say to people let's go create jobs. let's go that together. let's put america back to work. >> could you envision afl-cio or something similar wha to what happened here taking place in wisconsin? >> we'll see it in other states. tonight isn't the end of the fight. it's the beginning of the fight. they'll continue to do some of these things rather than working with us to create jobs. we'll continue to fight them. we'll continue to get stronger. the mor

>> first of all, everyone is watching ohio. as ohio goes, so goes the nation. think anyone outside ohio fully understood the ground swell here in ohio. john kasich has been the best community organizer in the state for democrats, but it's not just democrats who have decided they're voting no. i mean, we've seen so many republicans come out against this. we're seeing a lot of independent voters. in my own neighborhood, yards that have mccain signs in 2008 have vote no on issue 2 signs. everybody knows a schoolteacher or a police officer or a firefighter or a nurse. for me, this is personal. i have a -- my sister, toni, is a public school teacher. my sister, leslie, is a nurse. the man who came earlier this week, or last week to our home to install our new microwave had a son who's a firefighter. he said he has never seen his son participate in a grassroots effort like he has with this one. he's going door to door. this is what kasich and the republicans did not anticipate is when you go after public workers, you're going after family members of tens of thousands

. ♪ state, ohio.hio say today if they could redo the laekdz in which they elected john kasich, they would pick the other guy by 18 points. the polling says john kasich has the worst approval rating of any governor in the country. polling this year for kasich put him at third, second or third place depending on the poll and the times in the bum me out sweepstakes competition for most disliked governor in america. ohio may have picked this guy just last year, but they really wish they hadn't picked him and really don't like him now. if you're running a political campaign of any kind in ohio, do you make the face of that campaign john kasich? really, mr. buyer's remorse and mr. 33% approve rating. they're going to stop it from being repealed features john kasich personally at every turn. this is voted on in ohio tomorrow. kasich and the republicans and the out of state conservative groups durching money into ohio right now to help kasich, they want ohioans to vote tomorrow to keep the law to strip union

a better ohio. workers have it with a blockbuster, and passed a law to do away with collective bargaining, so the workers would have no rights to negotiate a contract. no rights to talk about their wages, their benefits, their pensions. and so he got that passed real quick without anybody seeming to notice, and we've been fighting ever since, to get it repealed. and today, it's on the ballot. we have worked real hard, the people in ohio. the workers in ohio have worked real hard. >> now, the workers i understand, and eye been out there a couple of times as you know. 321,000 signatures required to put it on the ballot many you got 1,300,000. if a lot of them came out tonight to repeal it, won't that send a message across this country to other governors and state legislatures that people will not stand to lose collective bargaining for themselves public workers? >> we sure hope so, al. are you write about the million signatures. we've had thousands of people volunteer today, from other states to go in

ohio did. we will come back to that in a moment here and box five and six on the map are over in the box to the left. that's wisconsin. two changes made to the territory of wisconsin due to the erie canal. one was the western boundary number five taken away from the future state of wisconsin and get into the future state created to its last, which is minnesota and i provided minnesota with support at duluth. and the number six shows the upper opinion below which extends off the wisconsin. the line down there between ohio and michigan. when ohio wrote a constitution for statehood in 1803, and they suspected that this line duties from the bottom of lake michigan in 1787. keep in mind has its own paper doesn't mean people know it really is. this is the cut off the western river in ohio for the support or where it empties into lake erie at toledo. they described them as coming from the northern and a top of toledo to the bottom of the trade lake michigan. that is why ohio is start the angled line.

there is a little place between indiana and kentucky, the island in the ohio river. the ohio river.e rivers are divided down the middle and some are not. the ohio was entirely part of kentucky off of the indiana shore so there is an island very near indiana that has filled in between indiana and the island as it is kentucky. there is enough land that i think maybe a racetrack, maybe a casino, what can we do here? andy and on is not too wild about that but it is a conflict but not that big of a deal. >> i want to thank you marks mark stein for sharing your extraordinarily interesting -- [applause] and i thank all of you for coming again and we will see you outside. don't forget your take away on the way out. you're right about the money and wisconsin managed to survive with this intact and ohio didn't. the difference? >> the difference was up in wisconsin what governor walker made sure he did was exempt police and firefighters from some of these restrictions on collective bargaining and that's not the case in ohio and that seemed to bother a lot of ohio voters, there with an as poll that showed one in five republicans seemed to have an issue with the collective bargaining restrictions no doubt because of the police and firefighters, inclusion in them. >> and republicans in ohio also weren't as united as republicans were in wisconsin and some of the other states, indiana and so forth. on kasich came into office, the republican governor, want today focus on the budget deficit closing the budget gape without raising taxes and spending and worry about union stuff later, but the republican legislature kind of forced his hand and wanted to do everything at once and as kim said they included police and firefighters in these union reforms, some people didn't like that, but the republican pa

but this is ground zero right now, ohio. good to be here. >> what's the latest in ohio?are you seeing on the ground? what's the conversation? >> unbelievable energy. you know, one of the things that we've been absorbing with this sort of occupy phenomenon is creating a lot of energy, a lot of excitement. but is this energy going to actually translate into any power? ohio is where you're going to see this thing turn into power. i was just at a rally with young people and labor students and workers standing together. and people are serious. first of all, they understand this is the fight. the whole issue. did these republican governors, these tea party governors overreach? are they going to be punished at the ballot? or did they do the right thing? that gets decided here in ohio. now, listen, the polls are looking good right now. don't believe the polls. believe in the fight. everybody's got to come out. they know we are dumping millions of dollars possibly worth of ads this weekend. they're going to pull every dirty trick in the book. but i think you're going to see this

in the days of tim russert, who used to say ohio, ohio, ohio, it's one of those states that seems to be so much a bellwether. >> the story of politics has been the energy on the right. people engaged and focused and desperate to change washington. what we've seen in ohio, it's clear, is that not just labor, but the progressive movement, the democratic party is engaged and ready to fight. and in john kasich, they have a governor as they do in florida and wisconsin and a few other states they can demonize and make more of a punching bag than i think mitt romney can be made into because he's less of a distinct figure right now. to energize democrats in the short-term in ohio, in florida, this is a great day and a great result for the democratic party. and they're excited about it and they see they can be the party of energy, engagement, and enthusiasm. >> mayor brown, it seems that president obama is a highly educated guy, elite educated you might say surrounded by a lot of guys from the people very much the old left and new left combined. not exactly a labor guy, not exactly a bread an
