ohio is the heartland, no state had more mileage than ohio. it was close to 3000 miles. indiana is the next in terms of greatest mileage, about 2000 miles. now, if you take the county seat town of tippin, which is located in north-central ohio. there was 11 different interurban projects projected to go to or through the town. the only one, the eastern, was ever completed. so that is not unusual. we have these paper railroads, some of them actually incorporated and in some cases there would be some actual construction. there were a lot of projects in texas, in the lone star state. back in the early 1980's, when i had too much time on my hands, i did an article on unbilled -- unbuilt railroads in texas and after a lot of work i concluded there were about 22,000 miles of interurbans projected in texas, but only about a hundred of them most of them were in the greater dallas and fort worth area, although there was a high-speed rail connecting houston and galveston. you come up with 500 miles, yet you projected more than 20,000. so there was a lot of paper interurbans. now, l

but you are right to bring up ohio, florida and pennsylvania. the presidency is won in the states, not with a national poll. we have not bad news for trump. he's doing poorly in florida, but he's doing fairly well, roughly tied with hillary clinton in ohio and pennsylvania. mitt romney lost all three those states in 2012. donald trump would have to win all three to win the white house. bill: in all three states he wins across the board on who is more honest and trustworthy. he's the clear winner in florida, ohio and pennsylvania and the economy is issue number one. >> he leads in the national polls and the states on that. voters for years have said the economy and jobs are the most important issues for them. but the thing to remember is while they do say that, those are not only issues they consider in making a decision on who to vote for for president. if you look at the state polls, both have gender gaps. but hillary clinton has more support among women than hillary clinton does among men. trump has not rallied the 90-plus percent republicans

i want to turn now to brynn from turnerer'ses hometown of oakwood, ohio. so tell us more about this letter from the mom to the court, brynn, and how is the town reacting? >> reporter: pamela, remember this is one letter of many that was submitted in court during the sentencing phase of this trial. and they all sort of serve the same purpose, right, was to get leniency for brock turner. so the mother's purpose was exactly the same. she basically told the judge it would be a death sentence if her son went to jail or prison for a very long time. but i want to point out a certain siection of her letter because it does talk about his upbringing in oakwood, ohio. she says, there have been many references to brock being from a wealthy, privileged background and he thinks he's entitled. your honor, this could not be further from the truth. dan and i are a working lass midclass couple with midern values. trust me when i say silicon county, california, is vastly different from the south suburbs of dayton, ohio. we've had some time to spend here in oakwood, ohio. we'

a decent guy, small town in ohio. in a copy of the statement brock turner gave to his probation officer. coming from a small town in ohio i had never really experienced celebrating or partying that involved alcohol. a statement that possibly led to his six-month jail sentence. but was it true? according to new court files, the answer is likely no. evidence he sent texts to friends that prosecutors say proves he was a drinker who partied regularly using marijuana and other drugs. joining me now, cnn's brynn gingras. cnn has obtained this letter written to the judge by brock's mom. tell us more about that and how the town is reacting to that and all of this. >> well, pamela, quite frankly, this is a town that seems to want to separate itself from the whole entire brock turner incident. oakwood, ohio is the town where brock turner was raised. this is where he went to high school and competed in sports. we talked to city officials, city employees, residents, neighbors of the turners and really everyone said because this i

in my view, that's a ripoff of ohio consumers. i'll be asking the company today how they're going to fix it. specifically, when time warner cable discovered the overcharges, it only dealt with the problem prospectively. it took erroneous charges off the bills going forward, they do not provide any back refunds and did not provide notice to customers so they could investigate the problem themselves. they just kept the money. based on data provided to the subcommittee, time warner cable will overbill the customers nationwide an estimated $2 million for equipment charges in even after discovering the 2016, billing errors. they'll fail to do the work required to provide a full refund. we'll talk about that. they have recently been acquired by charter communications so i hope they work to fix the problems. charter this problems -- this problem. but, charter has had problems of their own. -- up untilust august 2015, they did not -- that means they cannot receive the correction of the bill unless they saw the problem themselves and conta

and the people of columbus ohio and central ohio for a big victory. we won the federal department of transportation smart city grant competition. this is something we've been working on for months. it's a big deal to us in central ohio. it gives us the opportunity to get not only $40 million in terms of a grant from the department of transportation to be a model city but also in combination with another grant from vulcan corps of $10 million and -- corporation of $10 million and $90 million raised in the private sector to have a total of about $140 million to reshape transportation in central ohio, to create more economic growth for the citizens of central ohio but also to be this model, not just for ohio but for the rest of the country in how we can use smart transportation to help create economic growth and opportunity. i want to thank u.s. secretary of transportation foxx for getting this decision exactly right. as i have said to secretary foxx about this competition over the past several months, i believe this is the right investment for our tax d
