for more on the state of play here in ohio, i spoke with karen kasler, ohio state house bureau chief for ohio public radio and television. right now, there is so much attention being paid to voting irregularities, especially considering so many people are already voting. what are some things in ohio that people are concerned about? >> ohioans have been early voting since 2006. so, this is not new to ohioans. it's not a brand new experiment. but this year, 2.1 million ohioans havesked for absentee ballots by mail, and that is much bigger than the previous record of two million back in 2012. so this is a huge number. and they've been flooding boards of elections with these absentee ballot requests. and now, with early voting in-person underway, they've also been coming to the early vote center in each county. right now, we have triple the number of people who came in the first week. 193,000 ohioans cast ballots in person the first week. that's triple the number that cast ballots in 2016 in the first week. so these are huge numbers that are coming in. most of them are unaffiliated voter

ohio state won, by the way, ana.ut that just shows how the president is specifically tailoring his message and it goes beyond ohio. you know, states like nebraska where the president's going to be in the very near future, wisconsin, these are all big ten states where college football's very important, and he's making a very direct appeal to those voters. ana? >> as i look behind you, i don't see too many masks but it is hard to tell because people's backs are to us in your live shot there, ryan. but stand by with me because i want to give a quick fact check on what we heard from the president as he walked away from reporters saying they're doing very well in ohio when it comes to the coronavirus. ohio just saw its highest daily case count. it was the third day in a row in which it topped its previous record, and so, you know, ryan lizza, when we talk about the reality check here for the president, he's walking into this rally, states where he's defending that turf that he won back in 2016, we heard him say he's expec

think about ohio, wolf, as a hockey stick.tern part of the state, along with the southern part of the state and you heard a lot of this from john king. in the southern part of the state they have to have a very big turn out for trump to win. because the reason down in the southern part of the state is there aren't as many people town there. western side of the state will give him good numbers but his challenge is the rest of the state. you know, the middle and here in columbus, in central ohio. i think john hit on a very important point. that is in cleveland, the african-american turnout, will the african-american voters come out? it's almost in some respects not the same, not quite the same as philadelphia. philadelphia kind of runs the state of pennsylvania in a lot of respects and it's about the automatic turnout. that's why you saw barack obama appearing there at a speech. he also delivered his speech for the convention in film. when you look at cleveland is the african-american turnout going to be there. it's all in ohio

joining me now to discuss ohio secretary of state frank larose. thank you for taking the time this morning. >> thank you, jim. >> more than a million in ohio have taken advantage of early voting. does early voting in your state favor either party? >> i don't think it does. i tell you what it does favorite, the democratic process. we've seen double the numbers of voters that we've seen casting previously in 2016 have showed up for early voting as well as absentee voting in ohio and we're just proud to see it. >> no question. good news, more people vote. federal officials announced yesterday that both iran and russia have obtained u.s. voter information in an effort to interfere in the 2020 election. i wonder, have you seen evidence of that in ohio and are you concerned that might be used to disrupt thing oselection day or in advance of election day?

every time i go to ohio, it's all of the topics. people are interested in manufacturing, interested in wages, the affordable care act, social welfare and social justice. what is your sense of what is motivating ohio voters right now? >> a number of things. first, thanks for having me. people forget that ohio is not only a manufacturing state, but one of the largest agricultural states in the united states. >> that's right. >> when the president came here four years ago, he promised he would bring back manufacturing. manufacturing in how ohio now is at its lower than in a decade. we've had more bankruptcies than anyone can even remember how many times we've had this number of bankruptcies. he talked about what he was going to do about education. all of the things he said, none have come true. there were promises made, no promises kept. i think the people of ohio have realized this president is not acting in our best interest. when you lay on top of that covid and what it's done to this economy, people have said, you know what? we gav

cleveland's industrial skyline rises from the ohio coast on lake erie and it's ohio's ric's the industry agriculture and service jobs that make it a microcosm of the u.s. and its what makes ohio the bellwether state. for decades all routes to the white house have gone through here ohio has voted for the winner in every presidential election since 1064 and they take voting seriously here i think it's just most important especially if you want to see change no republican has ever won the presidency without 1st winning in ohio. it may holes bowling alley winning is the name of the game. here in suburban cleveland the diversity with an international border the crowd leans toward democrats and away from president trump he's mentally unbalanced and he is a threat to the health and well being of everyone on the planet i'm looking for a change this upcoming election season just that we can kind of get back on track as a country. on the state's vast farmlands and in the factory town of canton where apache industrial services recently expanded into coronavirus cleaning solutions penetrates the d.n

so i'm very, very bullish about what's going to happen in ohio. i think ohio's going to turn blue. we have republican suburbs, joshua, that have more biden signs than suburban columbus and suburban cincinnati and cleveland and even suburban toledo and akron. and a little bit in youngstown. where they're putting up joe biden signs. and i mean it's really exciting what's happening on the ground out here. i know there's a lot of toxicity. i know there's a lot of angst given what happened in 2016. but i feel very good. and i think we're going to make it happen and ohio's going to turn blue, which would just put this election away. but a lot of work between now and then. everybody's got to get out the vote. don't take anything for granted. but i think we're going to have a big, big night in a few weeks. >> before i let you go, some of that angst has to do with the system of voting itself. there was one ohio county where 50,000 of the wrong ballots were sent out. that's supposedly going to be corrected within about 72 hours or so. any concerns about the voting systems in ohio or the voti
