i appreciate my colleague from ohio. this house just passed a spending framework for $3.5 trillion in new government spending. and immediately following what's next, a plan for a federal government takeover of elections. h.r. 4 is focused on overturning the supreme court decision, shelby county vs. holder, and reinstituting federal power over state election laws. preclearance was established in 1965 because there were blatant attempts to disenfranchise african-americans. we're not debating that today. we've made great progress since 1965. so what's the purpose of h.r. 4? h.r. 4 is a federal power grab. this bill would gut, this bill would gut voter i.d. laws across the country. the bill would allow the biden department of justice to veto state voter i.d. laws. in my home state of wisconsin, some said commonsense voter i.d. laws would lower turnout. they were wrong. in 2020, wisconsin had the fourth highest voter turnout in the country. this bill would make it harder for states to maintain accurate voter rolls. accurate v

we saw it again earlier this week in akron, ohio, where you saw schon tell brown beat nina turner, who was a well-known surrogate for bernie sanders. we saw it in the virginia gubernatorial primary and we saw it in the new york city democratic mayoral primary where eric adams beat back a slew of progressive candidates. the bottom line is, at the ballot box we have an idea of what the base of the democratic party looks like. it looks a lot more like the democratic coalition joe biden put together. in congress right now, the base of the party is perceived of the progressives. the question is, where are democrats going to govern? govern towards that base in the electorate or the supposed base on social media and that they've seen elected to some parts of congress? >>> when we come back, more evidence that in politics, twitter is just not american.

the ohio special election on tuesday beating nina turner an outspoken liberal who co-chaired bernie sanders 2020 campaign. joining me now to talk about is democratic strategist and senior vice president of fire house strategies michael starr hopkins. thank you so much for being with us. i just wonder, you know, what do you think about what -- really just about what jeffreys is saying, this statement? is he right on? >> hey, thanks for having me. i think jeffries hit the nail on the head. look, for every a.o.c. and cory bush, there's a stephanie murphy and a conner lam who managed to be democrats and win in a swing district. and when you have the progressive wing of the party attacking the establishment wing of the party, you end up doing the bidding of republicans. this administration has managed to get a $1.9 trillion stimulus passed, 165 million americans vaccinated and child credit that has been transformational. so have we gotten everything we wanted done? no. but we've gotten so much done.

in ohio's race it was his choice that came out.ng about here's the way to keep the house and senate. find people not as progressive, more middle of the road candidates who can win on both sides of the aisle, that's how you win elections in november. jim clyburn was right on the president, he was right again so far and he's not done yet. >> as much as progressives had a moment in washington this week by pushing the eviction moratorium, it was seen as their pressure that got the biden administration to move. they've taken some losses, is that the democrats fielding the candidates in 2022? >> it's in jim clyburn and joe biden. if you're going to win in purple districts, it's going to be done with someone more of the middle of the road and they're defensive in the house and senate so they want candidates primed for the middle of the road races. >> it's august recess for the house, we know the senate is still here trying to get the infrastructure bill done in the next week or so. what do you think in terms of you and your colleagues as
