ohio and the nation will be missed. steve latourette. july 30, 2012, was not only a sad day for the state of ohio and the ohio delegation, but it was a sad day for all reasonable, level-headed americans. july 30 marked the day steve latourette, my good friend, announced his retirement from congress. steve is and always will be a champion for all of northeast ohio. the impact he made on his district and the state cannot be disputed. he is hardworking and easy to work with. steve is a master of bipartisanship. he wrote the book on working across the aisle. he and i recently introduced the restore our neighborhoods act and we are working together to ensure this bill is included in an end of the year bill. we need more members of congress like steve. he is one of the few members i could always rely on to be objective. he was one of only seven house republicans to vote against defunding n.p.r. he was only one of two house republicans who voted against holding attorney generic holder in contempt of congress. doctor general err -- generic holder -- general eric holder in contempt of congress. je

ohio? remember this guy? yes. republican secretary of state john husted of ohio. john husted, you may recall, worked tirelessly leading up to this year's election to try to limit the number of days with early voting in the state. early voting tends to favor democrats. he attempted at one point to make it so republican-leaning parts of the state would have more of an opportunity to early vote than democratic-leaning parts of the state. but the other thing john husted did was fought up until election day to make it easier for him to throw out provisional ballots. provisional ballots, basically ballots that are put aside because there's some question about that voter's eligibility, or where they are voting. and in the two house races that have yet to be decided, guess what it's coming down to. look at this one. in one of the races it's 14 votes that separate the two candidates. 14 votes between them. in that race, the number of ballots that secretary john husted has ordered be thrown away is 114. hmm, that might make a difference. in the other house race that has gone

you have four states you mentioned, pennsylvania, virginia, michigan, ohio. t now this year in the 2012 election, the electoral vote count from those four states was 61-0, obama. he won all four states. if you get a vote for every congressional district you win plus two if you win the popular state vote, if you did that then romney would have won 37 of the 61 electoral votes. it would have taken the national margin what we have now to 294-43. >> wow. >> basically at that point, florida which was less than a point could win it for romney in that scenario, even with him losing the national popular vote by four points. and then i asked dave wasserman, with the cook political report. i said if you did that in every state around the country, if that was the methodology, how would this year have gone? he said 276-62 romney. romney would have won if you did every state based on congressional districting. gerrymandering is part of it. the other aspect is lot of democratic voters are packed into geographically small areas. it's cities and the districts are drawn in way

take the four states and separate them into two. look at virginia and look at ohio. these are states that, look, obama won them this year and in 2008. but these are close states that republicans can definitely be competing in. one where they might get some pause is, hey, if we can win these states outright in 2016, why are we potentially giving away two or three electoral votes in our state. there is that. pennsylvania and michigan, these are states that have really been lost causes for the republicans in presidential elections. 198 the last time they won either one of thooez them. these are more safely blue states. sure you've got republicans in the governorship and republicans in the state legislature. but thing is an awareness on the part at some level that they are existing in blue states with democratic-friendly electorates. and if democrats, and if the media cried foul and said this is an explicitly political sort of repurposing of election law, and if democrats made this a major point of emphasis that this was this dramatic sore of overreach on republicans part

joining us now from columbus, ohio a teacher at ohio state and studied the violent video game cultureat's the most important thing you learned about the culture, professor? >> well, i have been study violent media effects for over 25 years and conducted over 50 studies we recently conducted comprehensive review of all studies 381 of them involving 130,000 participants and these studies show that violent video games increase aggressive thoughts. they increase angry feelings. they increase physiological arousal such as heart rate and blood pressure. which may explain why they also increase aggressive behavior because people who have aggressive thoughts and feel angry inside and are stressed out are more likely to behave aggressively than those who aren't. and they also decrease helping behavior and they decrease feelings of empathy and compassion for others. >> bill: i know lots of kids who play these games. and they are good kids, they are normal. they don't act out. they don't do anything destructive but they love the games. the reason they love the games because it empowers the child
