>> treva lindsey, you are the assistant professor of women gender and sexuality studies at ohio state university. the title of your panel here in st. louis organization of historians meeting, women behaving badly. what does that mean? prof. lindsey: it is a nice play on words. we are looking at women who challenged the norm at the time. whether that was gender norms or what women should be doing or activism they should be involved in, what role they should have in the public sphere. so we thought of them as behaving badly or outside of the boundaries. i looked at a woman named lucy diggs slowe and how she really challenged howard to become a more progressive space, a place more inclusive for the women attending there, and preparing women for careers outside of the home. in the second panel, we looked at the president of bennett college. we looked at the sit in's. how she was involved. in the last, a person who married an inmate on death row as a political act. she felt he was innocent and a lot of people wanted to create a political cachet around this political call and relationship. there was a

in 2007 i read a book it was titled overbloom by john mueller, a professor at ohio state university. he argued that fear of fligs after 9/11 caused more people to drive long dances which led to twrafk accidents that probably killed more people than 9/11 itself. he wrote, which is the greater threat terrorism or our reaction against it. a threat that is real but likely to prove to be of limited scope has been massively even fansfully inflighted to produce widespread and unjustified anxiety anxiety. that has led to policy over reactions. when i read those words in 2007 i wasn't ready to accept them. they sounded defeatist to me. 14 years removed from 9/11. and with yet another incident they're making more sense to me. they describe the world in which we live. we need to fight terror without succumbing to it. to din this discussion i have the ideal person tom ridge was the governor of pennsylvania on september 11th he was tapped by george w. bush to be the nation's first secretary of homeland security. >> joining me now is tom ridge. governor, let me begin with the question of semantics

steve: why ohio state university? gov. kasich: i wanted to get out of pennsylvania and strikeout on my own. i fell in love with the campus and it sounded like a great place and it turned out to be pivotal for me and my life. steve: you are 18 years old and you meet with the president of the university. gov. kasich: i just bugged them unless -- until they let me in. he was going to go the next day and see president nixon. i said, why don't i go with you? i wrote a letter in the president invited me to the white house. steve: you are 18 years old. you have to remember everything that happened. gov. kasich: i remember being outside the oval office and them telling me i would get five minutes. i remember walking in and being introduced and we sat at his desk. there are situations that can be daunting, we are not easy to intimidate. it was really cool to be there. i also saw him again personally in 1987 and that was an interesting meeting with him than. -- with him then. it was a cool opportunity. it was a long time ago, steve.
