. >> what class at ohio state left the biggest impression on you? >> gary ra shard's class, u.s. history since 1945 because i said i could do that. >> you were in school in '1978-79. >> so we started in the fall of '78. so we're dealing with the big election while i was -- well, we graduate, so the big election for me was 1980 at college when reagan beat carter. and i remember very clearly reagan being shot while i was in college at ohio state and what a big deal and following all of that later. >> did you have a reaction? can you remember? >> it was just awful. the thought that we've got a president down. again, i liked the way reagan used humor. you know, i forgot to duck and the way that he handled himself through all of that was deeply admirable. but i was quite patriotic throughout -- we kept -- every morning my mom and dad made me put -- if i didn't, my dad would, but we put an american flag up on our lawn can be and that was part of my growing up. my parents at that point had turned from being for jack kennedy, lyndon johnson and even hum friday in '78, they were for nixon
