the group donated the films to okinawa's prearchives. most of them are digtized available here to archive and copy free of charge. the first screening of the films was held at the archives last saturday. the audience was bigger than she expected. it included people that lived through the battle and young people learning about it for the first time. >> translator: civilians were the biggest victims. i came to understand that by looking at the film. >> translator: i think everyone should know about what happened in the past and understand it then we can build a peaceful world. >> translator: more people should see the images one of the ugliest in history and better understood and help contribute to world piece. she hopes the films will continue to tell the story of the battle of okinawa even after she's gone and help people around the world learn its harrowing lessons. >>> we'll have more stories throughout the day and our special coverage of the war 70 years on. later, we'll take you like to okinawa where a memorial service will be held.

okinawa was the site of the last major ground confrontation of the war. more than 200,000 people were killed nearly half of them civilians. japanese military operations there ended 70 years ago on june 23rd. prefectural officials organized a ceremony at the peace memorial park. around 5,400 people participated. japanese prime minister shinzo abe and ambassador caroline kennedy attended. at noon a moment of silence was observed. [ silence ] okinawa governor takeshi onaga said they continue to bear a heavy burden. >> translator: okinawa prefecture accounts for only 0.6% of japan's land area but it is home to as much as 73.8% of the u.s. military facilities that are in japan under the japan/u.s. security treaty. this excessive burden continues to affect people's everyday lives and okinawa's development. >> onaga called on the central government to hold efforts to relocate a u.s. base within his prefecture. prime minister abe expressed a sense of mourning for the victims of the battle. >> translator: i think about the countless sacrifices and fathomless blood

. >>> the southern island prefecture of okinawa has yet to catch up. its unemployment rate is the nation's highest and average income the lowest. many people say doing business in okinawa would be costly due to the long distances between the prefecture and japan's big cities. but lately okinawa's location is creating new business opportunities and its main airport is playing a key role. nhk world reports. >> reporter: it's the middle of the night at the naha airport. cargo planes are landing one after the other. around the clock operations give the airport an advantage as a distribution hub for asia. cargo planes fly from here to four cities in japan and eight in asia. the destinations include singapore and bangkok. they plan to addnew routes to manila this year. some of asia's biggest cities can be reached from okinawa in no more than four to five hours by plane. 2 billion people live within that distance. this means food can be sent to consumers very quickly. naha airport handled the total cargo volume of nearly 180,000 tons last year. that's up 30%

that was why general buckner was given command at okinawa. after that, army troops never served under a marine commander again until afghanistan. many commanders wrote letters to general marshall saying army troops should never serve under holland smith again. they had to issue a deceased and sister order -- the cease-and-desist order. he said it was the army training flu and after the battle and decided to give awards. it was a huge breach of protocol. he was humming his nose at holland smith. -- filmingthumbing his nose at holland smith. they said they frozen their foxholes and so forth. all of this would have died down after the war. you had the reunification fights, cold war heating up. in 1947, holland smith published his biography. how many people have red that book? -- if you have read that book? the only thing that is true or the birthdates. the commandant at the time begged him not to publish this book. let's keep our heads down on it and not antagonize the other services. when he asked sherrod to goes writer, he said he did not want

you mentioned world war ii, and southern-born soldiers flying the battle flag on oak -- okinawa. i've seen famous pictures of the flag on iwo jima. i saw it on many fire bases in vietnam. i think it's perhaps important to note that despite the fact that several large combat units fighting in iraq today come directly from the deep south the old south mississippi alabama, florida, south carolina national guardsman who are walking the streets of baghdad, and other spots in iraq. you don't see the display of the battle flag on tops of bunkers the way you did in vietnam. and so i think with a younger group of service men some of that i would hope, consideration of the soldiers standing next to them may be coming to the fore. >> i received several digital images from iraq, one man standing next to a large chalk drawing of saddam hussein on top of a tank with a battle flag. but it's not as common and getting a firm read on exactly how much the army is cracking down on that, the service is cracking down, whether today or in the '50s. it was discouraged officially in the 1950s and only wh
