inhofe: madam president, being from oklahoma, i can remember back in the days when they called oklahoma, southern kansas, northern texas, and southwestern missouri tornado alley. i say to my good friend from oregon, i have been in aviation for many, many years. i know people who won't even fly airplanes through what they call tornado alley. but now i think they know that tornadoes -- as many of our colleagues are fully aware of, are a daily threat to americans each spring as severe weather rolls across the country. in the past 30 years, over 34,000 tornadoes have touched down somewhere in the country, which means that one touches down on an average of every eight hours of each day. now, this chart right here, each one of these little green dots represents a -- a tornado, but they witnessed each spring, many of them grow into the voracious and significant storms that bring significant harm to property and life. this year 57 such tornadoes struck 14 states and claimed 550 lives. alabama was the hardest. i remember when oklahoma has been ranked as the hardest. they had over 240 killed. mis

flames destroy dozens of homes in parts of drought-stricken texas and oklahoma. i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc. >>> we begin this morning with a very public battle of wills. president obama has agreed to move back the date when he'll present his economic package to congress next week, after his first offer was rejected by house speaker john boehner. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with all the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that we're told was unprecedented, rejecting the president's original request. here's how it went down. president obama sent this request to john boehner, because he wants to address both houses of congress to talk about jobs and how to create jobs in this country. he wanted to do it the first day they resumed together on wednesday. but turns out that is also the date of the republican presidential debate in california. three members of congress are participating in that debate. by phone earlier we're told by the white house that boehner expressed no problems but he later

wildfires are also eating away at oklahoma's landscape. a combination of drought conditions and high winds have caused fires in several areas of the state forcing residents to flee their homes. approximately 250 firefighters along with national guard air support are engaging in an intense battle with the fires that already destroyed 22 homes and one church. >>> thanks to storms in new zealand, hawaii beaches became a surfer's paradise. the announcement of a high surf warning was music to the ears of surfers who braved the big waves. officials estimate the size of the waves measured 10 to 15 feet high. >>> and the outcome of the great pumpkin weigh-off at the alaska state fair ended on a shocking technicality, at least for one pumpkin farmer. the largest pumpkin tipping the scales at over 1,700 pounds went home empty handed after a puncture was discovered. what? according to the rules, that opened the door for a smaller competitor taking home the win despite weighing about 500 pounds less. we are all up in arms over this. >>> now for a look

according to the national weather service, texas and oklahoma just finished the hottest june through august period on record in the u.s. those states averaged temperatures of almost 87 degrees, beating out a record set in the dust bowl in 1934 in oklahoma, during that time, the temperatures averaged just over 85 degrees. >>> and what we first reported at 5:00 could be a sign of things, this five-acre fire on kern avenue destroyed buildings and acres before it was knocked back, a smaller fire near christopher high school has also been put out. cal fire is getting ready for even more fires in the next few days, in the last 48 hours, 200 lightning strikes in california. that could threaten the east bay hills this weekend. >> lightning strikes don't happen near a roadway, near a path near good access, they tend to be in remote locations where we have to hike in resources and in some cases even drop the resources in by air. >> if lightning starts fires in the bay area it could be challenging there. >>> and oprah winfrey was liked at facebook today. our ken pritchett was camped outside the

oklahoma city had 63. that's two straight months of 100 plus heat. even san antonio broke their report. so the drought won't end anytime soon. we do have rainfall this morning in kansas, a little bit in oklahoma and also rain right around st. louis, but the big weather story from now into the weekend is this cold air coming down from canada. this is the first shot of i'll even call it cold air all behind the storm system. it won't make it down to the gulf, but from the northern plains, great lakes, northeast especially, you'll feel it the next couple mornings. so there was one weak front and then this is the real deal. and that could change that cool to cold. this is canadian high pressure, this air is coming straight down from the arctic. in fargo, north dakota, of course they're famous for the movie and snow in the winter, but it's 35 degrees morning. we're almost getting down to a frost and freeze. it's 86 in cladallas. and that cool air is what will slide to chicago, detroit, cleveland, pittsburgh, new york, baltimore northwards up through new en

strong chance of storms in wichita and oklahoma city.s you know, in dallas and texas they could use every drop of rain they can get. that's going to be a welcome sight. temperatures are going to be a bit on the cool side for much of the northeast, just blitz. if you like to have the nice crisp fall weather, vermont, new hampshire, boston, it's going to be lovely for you. 67 in new york. back over to kansas city, 70 degrees. some stray showers may cool temperatures, especially in the afternoon hours. seattle and portland in the 60s. 71 in los angeles. 79 in dallas. 81 in atlanta. just a beautiful day for much of atlanta. we can expect also with severe storm possibility in parts of the central and southern plains, you're going to have have delays that are going to pop up. i'm telling you, especially by the late afternoon, you're going to see them back up in places like oklahoma city, will rogers, places like dallas, perhaps even chicago when the day is out. just be patient. things should look better by tomorrow. t.j., you're up to speed. l

in oklahoma city and dallas, we've gone from 100 degree heat to practically needing a jacket, too. that's what happens in the plains. 70 in dallas. look to your north, kansas city at 41. the cooler air is arriving. still one more warm morning from new york to boston, providence, hartford, down to philly, baltimore and d.c. the southeast is pretty mild, too. but that cool air will rush your way. the temperatures are dropping significantly behind this front. right now in kansas city, it's 19 degrees cooler right you to than this time yesterday. you notice that cool air, chicago, the same for you. that cold front will slide through the big cities in the east as we go throughout the noon to 2:00 hour. that's when you will start to see the rain coming down. it will get windy and then the skies will clear and temperatures will plummet tonight. pittsburgh, cleveland that front is going to clear out quickly during your day today. we may get a few thunderstorms along the front, for the most part a period of rain, then the winds will pick up and skies will clear. that's when temperatures wil
