i saw them in oklahoma city after the bombing.i've seen them in every language and every culture around the world. they had this expression on their face ofutter bewilderment . sort of a what's the meaning of life. and it occurred to me that maybe we are asking the wrong question. don't ask the meaning of life. life is asking. what's the meaning of you. and that is really the organizing principle around the book. that's what caused me to start to write the book was that i had met so many people as you have all around the world who exhibit the greatest principles and values during the most difficult times. and so i wanted to write about those people. it's a memoir, yes but i wanted to write a memoir wasn't about me because i figured nobody would care about me but it occurred to me that i had in fact met the most incredible people in this profession that you and i hold so dear. and so that was the device that i used two tried to tell those stories about the people and what made them rake. >> you talk about the book, you write about

he was a chickasaw and choctaw born in 1921 in oklahoma. anyone who knows anything about that part of the world in the 1920's and 1930's will know it was not an easy place to be native american. he grew up seeing lynchings on a fairly regular basis. lynchings of both native and african-american people. he grew up experiencing impoverishment, racism on a daily basis. you have to be tough and resilient and have something of a sense of humor. it seems his parents did have such a sense of humor. they named their child "chief," which utterly confused white people throughout oklahoma. he grew to manhood in the 1930's and 1940's. he was never actually a chief. of the chickasaw or choctaw peoples, but a hero to become a wonderful -- he grew up to become a wonderful native american artist. he served briefly in the second world war. when the war was over, he attended the university of oklahoma where he pursued his education and passion for arts. it is at the university of oklahoma -- that is chief -- where he learned the elements of cubism and surrea
