in and around oklahoma city. i heard earlier on they had warnings in oklahoma city. the whole state really is under a tornado watch, but as you can see, this is live. happening -- we have a chopper in the air from one of our affiliates bringing us this incredible video. this is a very large wedge tornado, and they don't classify it as a tornado until it actually touches the ground, but you can see in the distance that we might see a little bit of debris, which would tell me that this tornado has touched the ground, and you can see that there is farmland here, and some of the damage reports that we have gotten in some of these populated areas. so, unfortunately, we knew this was coming. this is tornado alley. it is the middle of may. and this type of thing happens. but in this age of cell phone video, and storm chasers, we are bringing this video to you live as it happens. and fortunately enough, yesterday people saw these images on their television screens and i think it helped people react and take cover immediat

you're west of oklahoma city? >> i am west of oklahoma city. the town is el reno. but i'm still about eight miles west of there. i would say if you could find a map there, calumet is the north south part of the cell itself. you would cross, you take calumet and go due south ten miles across i-40 and that's where you would be. this storm has technically gone a little bit to the southeast. so for this to move into oklahoma city proper along i-40, it would have to go a little bit further to the north. i believe this is probably turning a little further to the south. if it continues, that could take it into south oklahoma city or maybe even populated areas around moore. but from the northwest, not from the southwest or from the west like the storm took the track it took two weeks ago. >> all right. chad, stay with us. we're also going to bring in storm chaser dave holder. he joins me on the phone. he is also in the el reno, oklahoma area. dave, what are the conditions like where you are? >> we are just watching a developing strong tornado right now. we're southwest of

the suburbs of oklahoma city. the confirmed death toll for yesterday's massive tornado in moore, oklahoma, is 24 and nine of those victims are children. the reason for the smaller death toll compared to what we were told last night is that authorities say many of the victims were inadvertently counted twice last month in the chaos of the tornado's immediate aftermath. even with the lower number today, authorities are still cautioning they expect the overall death toll may still rise if more victims are found. all night long last night and all throughout the day today emergency responders have been combing through the debris block by block, car by car. you can see markings they use. orange x means no victims inside this vehicle. emergency crews can move on. in terms of whether or not there's hope for finding anybody else alive, the fire chief in moore, oklahoma, today said he is 98% sure that there are no more survivors to recover. he says that every damaged home in the city has been searched at least once already.

we are led to believe that the governor of the state of oklahoma, mary fallon, the oklahoma city mayoryor of moore, and the director of the department of emergency management for the state of oklahoma will all be giving us an update on the rescue and recovery efforts as they know them. the sun will set shortly in moore, oklahoma. it will be much more difficult to get through the night. rescue and recovery is an operation best undertaken in the daylight in 1999 when the very similar in path and hopefully in devastation storm came through, 42 people died. i said earlier 36. it was 36 in this exact area but it was 42 in all. died md call -- 37. 65 of those children, 20 are adults. and the call for volunteers has ended in moore they now say they have all the volunteers they need i have been following this on twitter as i'm sure you have. from across the nation and around the world prayers for these folks and the wish that they could do more. but at this moment it's a local matter for the locals to handle along with great help from the state including the national guard. some of whom have r

i'm going to bring in the city manager. >> i'm the city manager for oklahoma city. comments on behalf of the city of oklahoma city, thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been injured and that lost loved ones. i want to high lie a lit bit about water. water treatment plant was spare frtd tornado but we did lose power to the facility. it could be several hours before that happens. we have generators coming in to power up the water treatment plan. however, i do want to highlight a couple things. water is sa. it's tok drink water going forward but use it sparingly over the next day or so. and so, we should have the power back up but there will be areas of low pressure. and please use your water wisely over the next day or so. i want to introduce the oklahoma city police chief. thank you. >> obviously, area moore has been hit harder than oklahoma city. we're deal wang area just about three square miles, we're having to secure homes that receive smd damage if not total loss. i know what we're dealing with is less there. is a great deal of tragedy there. a long list

moore located just south of oklahoma city. the mayor says the city looks like a debris field.t to show you some cell phone video of some of the destruction. right now, first responders are searching 30 square miles of wreckage for any survivors. the tornado was at least a mile wide, touching down for nearly an hour, tearing up everything in its path. >> seems like the movie twister, there was horses and stuff flying everywhere. it's undes

in a suburb of oklahoma city called moore, oklahoma, a town that has already gone through one of the worst recorded tornado in american history in 1999 on may 3rd. now 14 years later being visited by what many believe is the worst tornado in american history. so far there are 51 confirmed fatalities. that's according to medical examiner in oklahoma. we believe as many as 20 of those are children. that's in so due to the fact that several elementary schools were in the direct path of the tornado. another, alas, we believe that there are several fatalities from that school, a search and rescue possibly just a search an recovery effort is under way at this moment going through the night. there are floodlights on. we talked to a local police officer who said they will be working through the night to search through the rubble there. the folks in moore, oklahoma had about 15 minutes total to get out of the way of the storm. and in the last minutes meteorologists doing something they almost never do. taking to the airways and telling people one to get in their cars and drive away as fast as

oklahoma city, tulsa, joplin. on the second anniversary of the deadly tornado and they are under the gun for large destructive damaging tornadoes and kansas city, too. this is not only going to be an event that will last today through the evening but even tomorrow. this is monday's let and as you can see it will move slowly eastward and some of the same cities are going to be potentially seeing the hail, the damaging wind, the heavy rainfall and the possibility for more tornadoes. this is also going to move into tuesday across more populated rejoins of the ohio river valley, down toward the mississippi river valley into texas. it does not move very much. again, this area is used to this type of weather. however, when you see warnings and you see funnel clouds that are happening live on the screen, you know it is a very dangerous and imminent situation. these are dew points, the moisture in the atmosphere. the content, the moisture, very, very humid and that is the fuel that feeds the storms. we will not stress thi
