oklahoma. the panhandle of oklahoma and panhandle of texas. they had blizzard warnings, shoveling snow before christmas, which is a little bit unusual. they don't average as much snow as you think. oklahoma city averages 18 inches of snow. let's talk about the satellite picture, because the storm itself isn't that impressive anymore in terms of winter precipitation. there's a little bit of mixed presip tailings in extreme north western missouri, but that's just about it. a little bit of mixed precipitation through iowa. for the most part, another rainmaker through the midwest, ohio valley, tennessee valley, and into the mid atlantic. we do have a frontal boundary draped right through, bisecting the metro area. that's still pretty nice considering it's december. it could be like 20s and 30s or 30s and 40s. temperatures 50 in bethesda. 48 in gaithersburg. 51 in arlington. 50 downtown and looking at temperatures even out to the west. 51 in sterling and 48 in reston. so here's the deal. milder, but turning wet. mild again tonight. you'll need your

our chief meteorologist rick reichmuth is in the oklahoma panhandle. my goodness, frosty there. how is it going? >> it's cold snow doesn't look pretty very long. they start to plowl it and t looks like this and you start to get the slush. this right here is highway 64. comes through oklahoma. we're through 20 miles from kansas. 30 miles from colorado. this road cuts through mexico up to kansas. and so it's not in that bad of shape right now. get up on to the side roads and it's still very, very difficult. this storm was so bad you take a look at some of the video out in new mexico and out oof texas and you can see exactly what happened. the wind was blowing so hard, shepard for an 18 hour period. we're talking about winds of 50 miles per hour and very heavy snow leaving around 12 to 18 inches in the deepest spot. you get that kind of storm and that kind of wind and it causes all kind of problems. places are still shut down. a lot of highways are still shut down. i 40 which was closeside reopen. part of i-70 in kansas was closed and reopen. part of santa fe was closed and now it'

and it's going to get colder across the plains and the texas panhandle will be impacted and oklahoma panhandlensas so we're going to see a large area of the country dealing with he potentially some blizzard conditions and there are a number of blizzard warnings underway already right now. and in anticipation of that storm system that right now isn't doing a whole lot. it's located across the southwest, ahead of it. we have the light showers across parts of texas and we need the rain out there. unfortunately not getting a lot right now just some light showers and across arizona and southern california where we're seeing the brunt of the precipitation with the storm system and it doesn't look like a whole lot right now, but again, it's going to intensify as we head into tonight and tomorrow and going to see widespread precipitation and snow and heavy rain across texas and white-outs across northeastern new mexico and southwestern kansas and that's what we're going to be looking at, the conditions with up to 18 inches of snow possible, harris and the gusty winds up to 45 miles per hour, so we're

rick weymouth, our meteorologist is live in the oklahoma panhandle. folks are used to this. is this? >> reporter: it's really bad. when you're in the panhandle you're close to texas, kansas, coland new mexico. that is kind of the bull's-eye on this storm. you see almost everybody in a four-wheel drive at least. they got about 3o 4 of an inch of rain before it turned into snow. you can see it's thick ice that is right below the snow that fell and that's made the roads so slick. interstate 40 toward amarillo closed. interstate 70 through parts of kansas closed because roads are impasse and they've had so many accidents. the hotels are packed, they've had to close down roads because they don't want anybody getting to their towns and stranded with no place to go. it's still very windy and it's causing the visibility to be dropped down to close to zero still, that's why we have the blizzard warnings in effect. not a lot of additional snow, an inch of two, but the snow on the ground beginning to drift all across the roads. bill: is that storm finished, or are more folks in line wi

fortunately it's got going to affect any big cities but if you live anywhere across the texas-oklahoma panhandle or parts of new mexico, northeastern new mexico, into colorado, that's where we're going to start to see very heavy snow and conditions going downhill overnight tonight, temperatures will go below freezing and in some cases, the wind chills will be downright dangerous. so ahead of the sun, that's where we're seeing the rain. you can see the bull's eye as i was saying across southeast colorado, northeast new mexico, into the panhandle of texas and objection, that's the bull's eye where we could see in excess of 18 inches of snow and blizzard conditions. like at -- look at this gust of 50 miles an hour. people are told to stay indoors the next 24 hours. up to 18 inches of snow and across the areas shaded in red, that's where we have blizzard warnings in effect. look at the wind gusts as we go through the evening, monday at 6:00 p.m., that's where we're going to see the wind gusts pick up in earnest, over 50 miles per hour as mentioned and then overnight tonight and into tuesday, it's go

the heart of this thing really in the texas and oklahoma panhandle, southwestern kansas, and can you a food of snow at the very least, for some maybe 12 to 18 inches but the problem won't be just the amount of snow, which will be copious, but it is the blinding driving snow because of the wind gusts. that's why we have a blizzard warning in effect. we'll see low visibilities, maybe down to zero for many. winds up to 45 miles per hour. plus this driving snow. here's a look in terms of how much we'll see. 10 to 15, 8 to 10. but also the driving will be the most perilous. there is the potential for areas around i-40 and i-25 right from colorado 25 down to new mexico. the chance for these two big interstates -- portions of them anyway, to be closed close to this afternoon into tomorrow. this is the big picture where we'll be tonight at 6:00. on the back side of this, there is this cold front driving through. on the back side where it is cold enough to turn into snow. but ahead of it, we could see a line of severe weather, thunderstorms. but that again will all change over to snow and fir

western kansas, texas and oklahoma panhandle, it's still going on.here. this video garden city, kansas, since noon yesterday they've been experiencing winds, is a stabed at 30 miles an hour. at times gusting over 40. visibility down to zero at times. that, my friends is a blizzard. and 70 mile-an-hour wind gusts. and mexico, 64 mile-an-hour. other spots in new mexico seeing intense amounts of snowfall. two feet in areas. and kenton, oklahoma, ten inches of snow. blizzard warnings out for texas panhandle. including kansas. and still now seeing winds blowing well over 30 miles an hour. this thing is not going to intensify. wind itself out and starting to stretch moisture to chicago, st. louis, cincinnati, back up to detroit and pittsburgh. most of it rain into the mild there. some of it in the beginning mixing in sleet maybe snow. general, the biggest problems are going to continue across the southern high plains. the mild air continues to be entrenched across the east coast for the next few days at least. 46 a high temperature in new york. 61 in atlan
