firefighters were able to successfully build a perimeter around the blaze which had blackened out about nine square miles. >>> also in arizona solemn ceremonies marked the one-year anniversary of the fire which killed 189 members of the hot shot crew. yesterday, neighbors came together in prescott to remember those who gave their lives protecting the town. they sang hymns and sounds of bagpipes drifted over the gathering. flags in the state will fly at half-staff today to honor those who have died. >>> a developing story overnight. a chicago-to-california flight diverted to kansas. the united 737 had to make a unscheduled landing in wichita after an emergency evacuation slide opened during flight. passengers on board posted these photos of the slide blocking the aisle. the aircraft was traveling to orange county when the incident occurred. no one was hurt. >>> a frightening ordeal for visitors at seaworld san diego. when a ride broke down more than 200 feet in the air. seaworld says a power failure left 50 people stuck on the sky tower ride for nearly four hours. they were eventually lowered around 7:30 last night. two riders were treated for anxiety. but there were no serious injuries. >>> an ominous sight off cape cod over the weekend. a huge great white was spotted just a quarter mile from the massachusetts shoreline, take a look at that. called the first such sighting in the area this year. a conservation group approached the shark near the beach said it was female, up to 15 feet long. the beach didn't close. but some swimmers decided to call it a day. >> people just kind of started to leave. >> ultimately at the end of the day, they're not going to want anybody to get hurt. >> probably a good idea to get out of there. researchers named the shark ping after they say years of decline, the great white population along the eastern u.s. is surging. >>> famed bourbon street in new orleans erupted in gunfire sunday morning all caught on camera. here's a view of the street when the shots rang out. you can see people running for cover. then at least one victim falls in the middle of the street. nine people were hurt in the crossfire in what police suspect was a gang-related shooting. pretty incredible. some of the victims they believe were tourists. they haven't really looked into the hometowns of people. but it actually started off as a feud between two men. they open fire. >> you know there were also bystanders there who helped a nurse who works in the intensive care unit and also a military combat medic helped before first responders got there. you know, there are shootings occasionally in gatherings like that. back in 2013 the saturday before mardi gras there was a shooting. and it's always difficult because people are very drunk, that's what you do on bourbon street down there. so, it's difficult to react and figure out what's going on. there are people in costumes. there's a lot of stuff happening. so, terrible story there. >>> moving on, the resumption of the oscar pistorius murder trial. it's been in recess for the last few weeks while pistorius' mental status was being evaluated. abc's lama hasan reports. >> reporter: does oscar pistorius know right from wrong? is he fit to stand trial? >> i'm sorry, my lady, i'm getting confused. >> reporter: in the latest twist, his dramatic murder case. the olympic athlete is set to hear the results of his psychiatric evaluation on monday morning. last month the judge ordering the 30-day evaluation after defense witness dr. merle vorster telling the court pistorius was suffering from what she called generalized anxiety disorder. >> when exposed to a threat, mr. pistorius is more likely to respond with a fight response rather than a flight response. >> reporter: perhaps explaining why he fired his gun that fateful night, killing his girlfriend, model reeva steenkamp. >> i did not fire at reeva. >> reporter: prosecutor jerry nell known as "the bull terrier" going on the attack. >> there could be another explanation -- that he is just lying. >> reporter: this trial which lasted much longer than expected has witnesses describing in chilling ledge outside the washington governor's office. police say the duo climbed inside through a window, and spent about ten minutes checking out the governor's place. they sat at his conference table, [laughter] and true defense hawks like me know what needs to be done. >> air strikes turn around the ability for an al qaeda army to march and gain more safe havens. >> we should cut off isis' axis. that involves air power. >> air strikes could be a big, key part. >> it's important that we do make air strikes. >> send some air power. send some air power with targets we can identify. >> stephen: yes, we must send some air power on targets we can identify. for some reason all of iraq's good targets are already rubble. well, folks, a crisis likes this demands action from a strong, decisive leader with a clear vision. but i'm busy, so it will have to be barack obama. >> we're prepared to send small number of additional american military advisers, up to 300. american forces will not be returning to combat in iraq. >> stephen: loud and clear, sir. these are advisers, not combat troops. big difference. a combat troop shoots a guy. but an adviser shoots a guy and then says, see, that's how i would advise you to shoot a guy. [laughter] of course, our military adviser program in vietnam was one of moirs successful ever in that it went on the longest. it started with fewer than 1,000 military advisers sent by president eisenhower and grew to more than 500,000 americans fighting in vietnam by 1968. the adviser program went so well they eventually had to hold a victory party on the roof of the u.s. embassy. i got ask, though, is... you weren't invited. is that why you're... it was a good idea. all those advisers were great idea in vietnam. i go to ask, though, is 300 enough? >> i am underwhelmed by the 300. it is not a strong showing of support. >> the solution that he laid out struck me as woefully inadequate. >> how on earth are 300 military advisers from the u.s. going to make a difference? >> stephen: yes. after all, how much can 300 soldiers do. [cheering and applause] well, i got to say, that part feels right. since iraq appears to be something of a bottomless pit, but i don't know what these advisers are going to do. here to tell me what these advisers are going to do is national security correspondent for "the new york times" and author of "the way of the knife" mark mazzetti. mark, thank you so much for coming back. [cheering and applause] here's the book, "the way of the knife." go get it. president obama says he's sending in 300 advisers. what classically is an american adviser? >> mostly what they do is mostly u.s. special operations troops. they will do training for foreign armies. steep delta force rangers, navy seals. >> army green berets. that's their classic mission, doing this kind of advising. >> stephen: what kind of advice are we talking about? are we saying, guys, i would not wear that shirt with those pants? what advice is need? >> obama said they're not going back into combat. we'll see what ultimately happen, but for now they will be more in protected areas, mostly looking at intelligence, ablizing intelligence. >> stephen: is that for us or is the intelligence they're gathering going to be given to the iraqis? >> it will be given to the iraqis. it could be used for air strikes, drone strikes, things the obama administration ultimately orders. he apparently hasn't made that decision yet, but that's one reason for having american troops go in and look at the intelligence and possibly pick out targets for the future. steve utash if you could have the president's ear, what would you tell him to do? hold on one second. i know he watches the show. mr. president, take me off mute for a second. okay. take me off mute. okay. [cheering and applause] is 300 going to be enough to do that job? >> well, if the job is to stop a civil war in iraq... >> stephen: what other job is there here? what other job is there? >> they would potentially be able to blunt the advance of this group isis as it moves toward baghdad. that may be the best they could do is stop the advance on baghdad. maybe hit troop positions of isis. but isis is now in the cities. they are spread out around especially the northern part of iraq, so it's not as if air strikes are this panacea where you can see masked armies. they're now mixed with the population. it's not as easy as saying, let's have air strikes. >> stephen: should obama have sent advisers earlier, more north at all? and remember, whatever you think the answer, is he's wrong. >> just... isis was... the answer is it's not easy to criticize the president. basically it's hard to imagine if sending advisers much earlier would have kept isis from doing what it has done. take mosul. take some of the cities in the north. >> do you think this is... obviously you don't have the president's ear. but would you imagine that this is the first... would you imagine this is the first 300, you know, advisers? could we eventually be advising them from aircraft carriers or advising them from... you know, could we be carpet advising them or advising them with some sort of motorized vehicle with lots of armor on front. >> advising can mean a lot of things. every fiber of obama's body is probably saying, i'm not going to escalate back into iraq. his foreign policy legacy is he ended involvement in iraq. >> stephen: evidently no. >> evidently no. we're going back inch it's hard to imagine seeing massive escalation of the military. >> stephen: hold on one second. no, that was easy. thank you, mark. mark mazzetti. [applause] >> stephen: when you were on a couple times before running for senate and as a senator, you wore your son's combat boots while he was over there. did he get back safe? >> he did. >> stephen: good to hear it. good to hear it. >> also i'm really proud from the time i entered the senate, we introduced the post-9/11 g.i. bill, which is the best g.i. bill our veterans have ever had in our history. and that was great moment in '08. i would think i was on your show shortly thereafter. since that time more than a million veterans from iraq and afghanistan have been able to get a better education and improve their lives. [applause] >> stephen: now, you were able to do that. not a lot of people get things done in congress right now, but you were able to get that g.i. bill through without, you say, cutting a lot of political deals to get it done. >> we didn't cut deals, but it was not an easy lift. looking back on it, it seems like a no-brainer to be able to give these people who serveed, their tuition, buy their books, give them a stipend like we did for the world war ii veterans, but we were opposed all the way to the very end by the bush administration. >> stephen: why would you, if you were in the senate, not an easy club to get into, and you were able to get things done you believe in, which isn't easy to get done, why would you no longer want to be one of the 100 men of the united states? >> i think it's healthy to take a step away. i've doane it four times in my live. i've served for a while. then live and go write and do journalism and those kinds of things and then come back in. >> stephen: are you thinking about stepping back in because there is speculation you will be the first democrat to announce his candidacy for president in 2016. >> i don't know where that speculation is coming from, but i'm glad... >> right here. you said you would not make a very good vice president. you said you would not make a very good vice president, and are you saying that you top out at senator or that you'll only take president? there's nothing in between. >> if i was going to be announcing for the presidency tonight, i would at least want to have worn a tie. commercial jetliner. he's sharing hig story of surviving a high altitude high risk flight across the pacific ocean. >>> plus inside a circus act, acrobats are breaking their silence and demanding accountability that may end some of their careers. that's ahead. >>> time to show you some of this morning's headlines from around the world. north dakota's now producing more than a million barrels a day. that's due in large part to killed nearly 40,000 since the 1960s. many accidents are blamed on defective parts and designs. this morning chip reid shows us why the government doesn't have the resources to ensure its safety. he's at the airport in northern virginia. >> reporter: well, good morning. according to "usa today," last year alone there was an average of three small aircraft crashes a day, and while the government usually blames pilot error, the report says other factors have been ignored for years. these are just some of the thousands of crashes of private planes and helicopters, so-called general aviation aircraft that "usa today" reports have resulted in nearly 45,000 deaths over the past five decades. that's almost nine times the number of deaths from commercial airlines. reporter tom frank just complete add year-long investigation. >> 45,000 people have been killed. it's an instance of manufacturers and federal overseers not doing their job. >> reporter: he says the ntsb has cited pilot error as causing or contributinge ingcontributing% 80% of these small airplane crash. but he says they overlooked defects in determining the cause of the accidents. when they questions this pilot, they felt their questions were unfairly aim at putting blame on him for running out of gas. investigators would later find it was this faulty bolt that caused his plane to go down. >> i was told if i had run out of fuel and i admitted to it that i wouldn't lose my license or they wouldn't go to bad for me. >> there are all sorts of individuals who have a hand in the quality of the airport, the way it's maintained the way it flies. it's like the person who missed the field goal at the end of the game. well, did he lose the game or did they lose the game because they missed you know five touchdowns earlier in the game. >> reporter: there has. been a fate tall accident since the colgan air plane crash which killed 50 and while ntsb has made it a priority to make commercial airplanes safering last year there were 1,200 crashes killing nearly 350 people and some of those investigations, the ntsb relied on manufacturers themselves to determine the cause. former chairman mark rosenker says the agency doesn't have the manpower to investigate all the accidents in person. >> they go to the ones where they find the most of what they believe to be accident payback, where they learn the most and then make recommendations to prevent them from happening again. >> reporter: the general aviation manufacturers association put out a report calls it sensational is tick and what they've done to improve safety safety. >> thank you. >>> for the first time a teenager who survived a trip in the wheel well of a plane is talking about his journey. yahee abdee was seen in airport security video jumping out of a plane after it landed in maui. it had taken off from san diego, kachlt the 15-year-old made it in freezing conditions. in an interview with our san francisco station kpix he revealed why he risked his life. >> i only did it because i didn't want to live with my step mochlt mom. second of all, i wanted to find my mom. i didn't care if i ended up dieing. >> he said he wanted to find his mom. >> he wanted to find his mom. he apparently doesn't like his step we talked with two sisters. they're the first wave of immigrants who we're seeing in texas. all smiles and dressed in their sunday best it's hard to imagine what these girls went to to get from honduras to the u.s. you hid in boxes. >> yeah. >> inside a box. >> yeah. >> reporter: you were scared. >> yeah. >> reporter: you couldn't breathe. >> yeah. >> reporter: the 10-year-old and 15-year-old would link in fear. you said people would break into your hourks pull you out of the house, rob your cousin on the way to the bank. >> yes. their mother worried for them. she paid $10,000 to bring them to the united states. she said it was too risky for them to stay in honduras. what do you want for them? >> i want them to be somebody get ahead, she said not clean houses like me and have a career. the children left the honduran capital last year and illegally crossed the border. when they made it to the border the girls stayed in a stash house full of men for nearly a week. >> what were you thinking when you were staying in the house? >> the world that was used is this concept of presence. in the past you would put goggles on whoever made them and there would be screens in front of your face and there was an illusion there but not much more than that. now you're developing in this world. maybe you're in a movie theater watching a movie. >> i want to ask you about the young man featured on the cover. he's fascinating, kind of a quirky genius. what did he think was missing? in the past they heard about the headsets but everyone heard about it. >> there's always been discomfort that's been associated with virtual reachlt palmer was a home schooled kid. as a teenager he modified game consoles for friends, he fixed i phones. he was always a tinkerer. he also wanted virtual reality. he grew up wanting to be inside the games he play. one of the earlier solutions he came up with is magnifying the image so much so that a small display would actually feel like it wraps around your face. >> right. >> after that was solved it became cutting down the delay which is called latency. that's one of the most important things that cuts down on the simulator sickness as you feel. so as time has gone on and iterations have come. they effectively solved most problems. now it's just the point of getting it out to the public. >> this is the sixth generation of his headset and he's finally solved these problems. we're less than a year away from this? >> could be. they're still not giving a date. a lot of people thought it was going to come this year. it's looking like it's going to be next year with the money that's coming in. facebook bought them early. with that money they're going be able to add a number of improvements that they thought were going to be financially feasible. >> bigad talked about the ultimate uses of this. it was so easy to see zuckerberg post something saying this is how he could see doctors, go to school in another country and learn something from a real foreign teacher. >> mm-hmm mm-hmm. for him this is the platform on which everybody's going to be communicating. it's not about having facebook in virtual reality. it's about being there to guide this new platform that's going to being the default. i mean we're very used to screens now and smartphone screens being the window through which we mediate the world. that's going to change now that we have something that's so much more immediate and present for ourselves. >> right. what always strikes me when i see something like this given the pace of change if we're here now where are we going to be in five or ten years? >> for a while, yes. >> is that what got you -- >> he was part of it but my grandmother was a great inspiration in my life and she was a huge part of me growing into this sort of food therrien and sort of like completely indulging my entire life in the food business. >> we have a lot of chefs talking about season alt but i think you're the first one that says if a product is only ripe of two weeks that's the lengthet of the product on the menu. how challenging is that? >> it is chalging. what's wonderful is we have these micro seasons. as we all know, this winter was pretty brutal. it also lasted halfway through spring so the dynamics the way the patterns are change drag matticly, what we do is we followed those micro seasons to understand when the things are growing. we picked them cooked them, present them, eat them. when it's no longer at its peak we move on to something else. it's inspiring. >> let me take you back to australia for a minute. you're inspired by your grandmother. what brings you to the united states? >> it was a funny thing. i think i had an option when i was a young man. i was 24 when i went to work in japan. i actually always had an idea of coming to the united states because my father is from ohio. i thought i'd come for one year and all of a sudden 15 years later i find myself in new york and this is the second restaurant i've opened. i love it. i love it. >> we're looking at the images of the restaurant right now. it's super minimalist. >> we like to highlight the food on the plate. keeping in mind, in my mind anyway that's what you're there for at a restaurant. you sit down have a great drink, hospitable situation and good food. >> you say the way to experience one of your meals is to do a ten-dish meal. >> you'll have tell and then four petty fours. it's not something you pop in and say we're going to have a four-hour development. at the same time it is a lifetime event. it's with unof those childhood memories i bring to the table and it's all the inspiration we have in the local market and 23 years of cooking expertise with a great team behind you and this is what we try to produce. it is a lifetime memory. >> not to be the lush here, but can i ask you what we're drinking? >> um, eat more ice cream. >> reporter: li is home schooled. some, including the top ranked players suggested 11 is too young to play in the open, li is winning a lot of fans, including this year's u.s. open leader. she knows what it's like to be a child fee nom. she played her first open at 13. it can be a lot of pressure, but li seems to be having fun out there. usually wearing a smile along with those sparkly outfits and promising this is just the beginning for her. >> it's been a great week. i had a lot of fun. i learned a lot. >> reporter: incredible start for a girl who can drive the ball 230 yards but won't get her drivers license for another five years. >> we are excited to have lucy li with us this morning. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> it's very wide. the reasons for this is that 40% of all u.s. adults have been subject to one of these breaches. of those, about a third will be victimized by either identity fraud, somebody using your credit card or a real identity theft, which can get totally tedious when it comes to cleaning it up. >> 40% seems high when you think of how many are shopping online. i know you have tips on ways to be safer and shop online. one is to not put that much out there, even on facebook. >> what you want to avoid is an identity theft. they are really smart. to be able to craft a profile, to be you online. the more information you share, the more data points you give this person, the more likely they are to be able to impersonate you. avoid sharing birthdays, addresses, geo location services. a new piece of research conducted for life lock. people who use these, five times more likely to be victimized than people who don't. >> remove the locator. never use public wi-fi. what else? i think the contestant is asking the question more than anybody. you want to get that right. >> i think you definitely want to get that moment right. i'm with you. >> we'll explain coming up we want to begin with the strong storms expected to begin throughout the weekend. the midwest is really getting hammered. >> for week. not just the tornados but the heavy rain and flooding. we have tornados caught on camera in western kansas. also a gust-nado reported. we did not have reports of in injuries which is a good thing. colfax wisconsin, wiped out in 1958, they also saw a lot of wind damage. again, thank god no one was injured. and then the mississippi river has been a huge concern as flood levels continue to remain an issue. they are well above their banks. 35 counties under a state of emergency and more rain is likely in that area. that is the problem. we cannot catch a break. there is no chance to really dry things out. this warm front just to the the front of minneapolis, helping to heat things up and produce the conditions favorable for thunderstorm development and this cold front moving east triggers these storms. right now the stongs storms are oklahoma and parts of ast kansas. but this afternoon another area develops from minnesota, including minneapolis, down into parts of texas. not so much a tornado outbreak but we see the threat of the isolated tornados that could cause damaging wind and harj lal. but in addition we're lack at t -- looking at the chance of more flooding. it is going to continue because another 2 to inches of rain possible. especially across northwestern parts of iowa. when you get the heavier down pours we're looking at perhaps even more rain. so it is going on the a concern and something we'll keep on kbrie on all weekend. >> want to turn now to the latest development into the investigation over aed to leers death. a little boy was left in a hot car all day. family and friends will say goodbye to him this morning. but the little boy's father will not be at the funeral. instead he is behind bars charged with murder. the father tells police it was an accident. butted a gabe gutierrez reports his story is now under scrutiny. >> friend and family rememberer cooper harris, the incident surrounding his death is deepening. he was loved and cherished and protected by both parents and all family members for his short 22 months of life. we'll miss him greatly. but police don't buy his father's initial story that he forgot to drop his son off in day care accidentally leaving his son in the sweltering car for 7 hours. >> suggests t s the manner of d is homicide. >> he has breakfast on june 18th with his son and drove to his office nearby. e went to the car during lunch and opened the driver side door to place an object into a vehicle and closed had door and went back into his office. he was charged with murder and chu cruelty to a child. >> it's significant and perplexing that prosecutors have downgraded had charge because of a lack of intent. and at the same time they are charging this father with murder. >> when he pulled over a seemingly distraught witness. >> you could feel his sorrow. >> but on anline petition has been full pulled by organizers due to new information released in rashds to the case. >> i seems like he was acting. >> just running around with his hands up in the air what have i done?
