the other culture in this room is pat oliphant. [applause] >> please greet pat oliphant. even more so by the work of pat, which you will see displayed on this screen. the culture he represents is not sort of broad gauge and long but highly specific. prospective over the course of more than 60 years as a cartoonist producing more than 10,000 individual cartoons five days a week for the denver post for several years, for the washington star for several years, and then he became the first 20th-century cartoonist to work independently. that is how popular his work was. it was syndicated through newspapers across the country out of his studio. so a specific, daily comment on events as they were occurring. far from being balanced, they were opinionated. that was part of their virtue. obviously, not so much in words, but especially in pictures. not just confined to cartoons, but also to paintings and sculpture. before i introduce our panel, let me speak some words of thanks on behalf of those who were instrumental in helping this program come about. take time to visit the exhibi

since the times 1st started there has been no loss of life here despite 45 incursions by oliphant's it's an effective temporary solution until a longer term plan is made for managing the animals migration. the tusk force has motivated the community with over 500 people signing up to join and has supporters throughout the camp. what are you doing over here what is this. the idea i think it's all these different patterns and colors seems like it's a lot of work to do why go through all this trouble to do it without the holocaust my by that had to be. i don't wear all of a home with a machine a 3rd of. the death of my ready. you know limited family. do you feel that there's more danger living on the edge of the forest versus people who live in the interior of the camp. was without. doubt that i both saw what. i thought of philip as not on. the good of. the man in his own way to. his own i've been lucky and. not only do people feel more secure they are also more sensitive to the elephant situation saving the animals is now even part of the school's curriculum i believe you know what you're.

[laughter] >> this to me is a brilliant 'sample of the caricaturist art. we have seen in the cartoons where noses, chins and eyes were treated in typical caricature fashion, exaggerated. here, we do not even see dan quayle. the impression being that he is an infant, therefore of no significance at all. a character as a form of caricature, it is really interesting. the baby carriage has that , the monogram initial super fancy baby carriage from a wealthy family. that is a nice touch. earliert not to say that the little bubbles signified dan quayle. me of dunes berry at the time. it would always show president bush as skippy, the evil twin. that became a huge joke in the white house. resident bush got a big kick out of it. there were many print photos taken of johnson union, bob gave an dick cheney, talking to an empty chair, talking to the itium and they would sign and send it to the president. you might recall dena carvey doing hilarious impersonations of the president. after he lost
