and olivia troye, let me get with you and your reaction to the president now finally coming right out and saying very specifically anthony fauci is a disaster and at the same time letting it become public that he is afraid to fire him. >> well, i think you're seeing publicly what i saw behind the scenes for several months. and i know that there were times when he wanted to fire dr. fauci and everyone else on that task for telling the truth. he knew it would backfire. what you're seeing is the president's plain desperation because he knows he's on the losing end and he's on the downward trajectory. so what does he do? he doubles down. when people tell the truth and it's not the truth that donald trump wants you to hear, he fires back at them, and that's exactly what he's doing today with dr. fauci. >> when you were on the task force, was it at the point where dr. fauci was getting death threats? was that something you would know about? >> yes, i remember that clearly because that is when we got him a driver, and this has been going on for months. this is not new. and every time the pre

olivia, you've seen him in the white house. you've helped. you've been there when he asked vice president pence to take the lead of the coronavirus task force. i mean, there are projections now that we're going to lose up to 400,000 americans by february. does he even comprehend this? why doesn't he care? >> first, we've been talking about the fact that this virus would likely not go away. we knew he was briefed back in the spring, that this virus would probably get worse in the fall and the winter and that we needed to be using all of these months to prepare for that situation. and as much as he would hear these briefings -- and i know he understood it. i mean, i've heard the woodward tapes, which were quite frankly appalling to me because it was proof that he had listened and he was repeating what he was briefed about. but he is so focused on this political narrative of strength and the pandemic not being real because he thinks that it hurts him, and rightly so. this pandemic response has been a failure led by him. and i think he just does

for more, i'm joined by olivia nuzzi.e we even get to the outbreak, i wonder if you could just describe what the attitude towards safety measures in that building and on that campus have been generally among the staff, the sort of laissez-fairness. how do you yourself and reporters feel about that? >> we saw president trump throughout the pandemic downplaying the reality that we were all experiencing. we saw members of his task force or kayleigh mcenany briefing reporters. you could see who was wearing a mask, who wasn't. and on the campaign trail, you know, i've been to events where it's this strange situation. most of the people who are there, the president's supporters, are not wearing face coverings, but lately you see campaign staff, advanced staff, they have face coverings on and they're passing out face masks or hand sanitizer, but the person speaking, the president, and anyone who comes before him, members of congress, political candidates, they never do have -- they never have face coverings on. and obviously we'
