we want to talk more about these latest revelations with olivia troy. she was an advisor to mike pence and was the director fortunate rep -- director of the republican comeback. what's so disturbing about this is it was coming from inside the white house, from the white house chief of staff to mike pence's team, to his top aide. what do you make of the amount of pressure pence was under to overturn the election? >> well, no doubt he was under tremendous pressure to overturn this election, and i think, you know, incredible that he stood strong and did his duty and certified the election results as was the right thing to do. but knowing the dynamics here between the trump team and the mike pence office, this was something i've apparently seen firsthand before on how this sort of dynamic plays out. but i can imagine that the amount of bullying internally, the amount of intimidation, and when you're in a situation like this, it can be frightening, because you know that there can be consequences where people's lives potentially can be put at risk depending o

along with nbc news justice correspondent pete williams, olivia beavers is joining us, as well, congressional reporter for "politico." and pete, let me start with you and this hearing related to the documents on january 6th from the trump white house. you say the judge seemed skeptical about the arguments that were being made by those trump attorneys who were looking to keep those documents out of the hands of the january 6th committee. why? >> well, the trump lawyers are making two arguments here. first of all, they say that the january 6th committee has no legislative purpose that congressional committees don't have a freestanding authority to investigate, they can only gather information if they're writing laws. and trump's lawyers say they're not doing that, what they're seeking is not germane to writing laws. that didn't seem to sit well with the judge. she said, are you saying the president's notes, talking points, and records of controversial conversations on january 6th have no bearing on the investigation? and later she said, these are about who the president was talking to as people

. >> olivia, in jonathan karl's new book, we learned how mark meadows penned his top aide that detailed pence could overturn the election. the committee may not get the e-mail from meadows, but what about that pence aide? >> yeah, that's exactly what i would be looking at. i was be sort of working with the pence team on this and really working with that circle, especially the fact that they were -- their lives were in danger that day. this team faced that directly head on. they lived that day, they lived the trauma of that day, i would say. i would certainly seek out some of the staff to figure out what exactly happened here, and to be honest with you, i know she was subpoenaed, but i would be looking at mark meadows' aide, cassidy. she was by his side every single day, and if mark meadows isn't going to cooperate, one of the people in his inner circle knows about this. >> yschoen was on cnn this morning, and it seemed like he made a pretty big comment about mark meadows' claims. >> if you're talking about conversations outside the executive branch, then clearly those are not covered by

olivia: there's really two things going on. one is that we are seeing strong gains in categories like e-commerce, which reflects spending at amazon for the holidays. we are seeing strong gains in auto and gas basic a across the board. that would imply that the consumer is still spending. however, these data are not adjusted for inflation, so it could just be that these higher gains in certain categories are only because the prices are higher. take autos, for example. what will be really interesting is to watch when we get personal income and spending data, which are adjusted for inflation, to see if those square with the number we got from retail sales today. we will also get interesting earnings from retail companies which might give us a better gauge on where holiday sales are going, and if consumers are reacting to some of these price increases lisa: -- price increases. alix: olivia, thanks a lot. really appreciate it. let's look at the other conundrum, with walmart and home depot. they had earnings out earlier today, super
