howard: joining us now from charlottesville, olivia beavers who covers congress for "politico." obscure back bencher win the speaker's job when the three previous nominees were shot down? >> howie, it's actually just as you laid out, he was obscure. he's someone that republicans knew pretty widely. he was in leadership in the number seven position, and he used to be chairman of the republican study committee which is basically the largest republican group on capitol hill. and so he's had relations for a long time, but he's been strategic in terms of how he's sort of positioned himself for a moment hike this. he was never running against other colleagues like tom emmer and steve scalise, so he didn't sort of have some of these underlying bad blood feuds. howard: yeah. >> and he's been working sort of on keeping favor with the right because he wasn't speaker, he was able to take some of those convenients that other -- votes that other members of leadership were not able to do. so he had a different kind of record. so as you were laying out here, he might seem like he was taking a

olivia beavers, let's put up the candidates declared and potential on the screen to follow along. declared, steve scalise and jordan, strong possible, hern, leader of the republican study group, and patrick mchenry, the interim speaker. i would expect out of that group, likely to come down to a race between scalise and jordan. >> that's my sense talking to republicans and there are meetings happening right now on capitol hill, phone calls, both sides are working it. but they have to make different pitches. jim jordan has been a freedom caucus person transformed possible an mccarthy ally, built more support in recent years and much more of a team player. but he still has some of the lingering doubt about him among the centrist rank and file. he tried to kick out john boehner, grudges are a thing held very long on the hill. with steve scalise, he has to win over some mccarthy allies who have never trusted him. some bad blood, always sort of seen as vying for the position and some of those mccarthy allies are either trying to support jim jordan or trying to draft patrick mchenry and

and so what they told olivia beavers over at politico yesterday, at least two house republicans saider but they have not named the person yet. and the person will not only block jordan from becoming speaker but also will give cover to those who don't want to vote against him. it will be somebody likeable and be like, okay. you don't have to vote for jim jordan. vote for this other person. at least they are -- you know, they have done a nose count. at least a dozen hard nos. but those who -- it looks like he needs to win over at least 50 because they had two votes last week. the first one where he was nominated, he won 124 to 81 against a guy nobody had heard of, that austin scott, the congressman from georgia. far from the 217 needed. and then they had a second vote. it was 152 for jim jordan and 55 against him. so he has got to -- that is who is he going to talk to today. is he going to talk to 55 holdouts and can you please get on the same page. >> ainsley: sounds like if brian is true. shy of 17 votes. second new york stock exchange he is 152. >> now if brian's sources are correct
