culture editor olivia salazar wins. joins us live. tell us who is racing the red carpet this evening. >> we have two french films this evening. one of the four women presenting films in competition has a film based in an emergency hospital room. it is actually quite prophetic because this was shot months before the pandemic, but it really does show a health system at breaking point, and it has had very good reviews so far. earlier this evening, we had a film for my dutch director who was last here in 2016 with a film that shocked and impressed critics in equal measure, i would say, because of its sexual content. sexual content is also present in this film, albeit in a very different form because the action takes place in a convict, where a non-follows her calling to become a bride of christ, except she gets a bit distracted on the way by another passion in the form of a young woman. this film was actually inspired by a book published in the 1980's, and that brooke was based on a true story. it is looking good for its chances. >> we te

olivia salazar. you have the best ticket in the house. tell us about today's events. olivia: on the red carpet behind me people going into the movie theater for a french action film called " strong-willed." this is set in marseille. a police drama featuring some famous french faces. so, that screening out of competition. not too much at stake for that film but the big hollywood event of the evening was earlier on with wes anderson, "the french dispatch." a lot of people excited to see that film. on the red carpet, wait for a lot of stars, especially bill murray, benny snell del toro, and more, among the ladies starring in the film frances mcdormand and elizabeth moss could not make it but tilda swinton was there. this is the ninth time wes anderson has worked with bill murray. he stars as the editor of a provincial magazine somewhere in france. it's all shot in the southwest city in france. it's a series of vignettes, these extension -- eccentric writers, preparing pieces for the magazine. they seem to center on astronomy, evan card painting. -- avante garde painting.

olivia salazar leading the team. tell us about the films in competition this evening. ivia: just behind me the casting crew from the french from -- just entered the theater to see the premier. this comes from a director -- who stars a prolific french actor. before the festival i would've described the director as up-and-coming, only 37 years old. but with this film in the competition you can say she has officially arrived. earlier on we had an iranian director on the red carpet for the first time here at cannes. he is presentin a film called "a hero," centering on a man who faces a moral dilemma and he wants to do the right thing but he wants to appear to be doing the right thing. this film is a nuance study of human behavior, about trying to maintain your moral compass under great societal pressure and how how white lie can result in a tricky catch-22 situation which makes it a great drama. he got a really warm welcome when he came into the center, a much loved filmmaker here and a standing ovation when the film ended. that bodes well for this film that allows us to wa
