time, the newly elected freshman independent senator from maine, angus king, succeeding the retiring olympia snow. he's a former governor of the state, and it's said that he will caucus with the democrats. and a big redskins fan, which is particularly important today as they play seattle. senator, welcome, and all of you welcome back to the program and happy new year. senator, let me start with you. based on everything you've heard this morning, it doesn't seem like a great way to run the government or to solve big problems, does it? >> i think one of things that comes out of this is of course the budget is important and the deficit is important, but there's an underlying structural issue that's affecting the economy and the market, and that is people have lost confidence in the ability of our government to do anything. this whole fiasco with the fiscal cliff going two hours over the deadline, coming back, how it finally worked out, and simpson and bowles are right, it's a very small piece of the solution. it's not much of a solution at all. it was, in effect, the easy part. so i think the d

republicans, the gaps there and the more moderate republicans, o olympia snowe gone.ia senator saxby chambliss announcing he would not run again. chambliss was facing a heated primary challenge by conservatives in his party. that probably fed into his decision there. and recently we've seen very conservative republican candidates win the primaries. i was mentioning earlier. but not being able to go forward. who's going to take up that space for the moderate republicans? >> well, it's hard. because as you mentioned a lot of them are gone or they're halfway out the door. i would look to someone like senator bob corker, for example. we saw during the clinton testimony last time he just took his ranking position on senate foreign relations committee. he didn't pound clinton as hard as some of his colleagues in the senate. i think democrats will probably look to him if they want to strike some kind of deal in the near future. and lamar alexander as well. he has a little bit more of a tradition of working across the aisle with democrats. although i will note he is up for re

. >> you're replacing a republican who left, olympia snowe, essentially because she said she was sicke partisanship. what can you do in the next week, month to change that? >> i started by just meeting with senators. i think part of the problem here is a lack of relationships. everybody is going their own way, and they're keeping their partisanship on. i started out in the first two weeks, i've met with over 30 senators. one-on-one, sitting down, both parties. and what i'm finding is that everybody wants to get it going, and i think we just have to sort of push through. we have our differences, but they're not -- we ought to be able to work these things out. >> what's the best advice you got in these meetings? >> the best advice, i think, was keep talking to people, and i'll tell you, it's really funny. as an independent, they all, when i walk into the room, say, man, you're in a great place. you're in a great place. >> you are in a great place, senator. it's great to see you. we'll be sitting right down there and wave to you. senator angus king of maine, great to see you. >> thank yo

when olympia snowe left the senate, it was under the same statement that it is just so fun dysfunctional. we have to continue to believe that as we change both these bodies to look more like the contrary, they have to sit down and work things out. i think when you have two many of any one group, you end up with the same kind of thinking and that has to change. look at the fiscal cliff. i mean, there isn't an american who didn't know that we were going to increase taxes on the wealthy. maybe the number was negotiable. maybe 400,000 or 250,000 or 500,000. i visit my family over christmas and everybody knew where we were going to end up and yet they took it to the brain. and particularly, speaker boehner was more interested in patting his chest and sitting down and getting the deal done but most americans knew where we were going to land. i have to believe when we have more women and people of color this debate, folks who are more tied to their local communities they were going to get compromise and decisions to move this country forward. we have to add this divide in the house and senate.
