we can also see that there are virtually no runners who resemble olympia snowe. that overlap the peaceful in the previous slide has all disappeared when we look at those that actually run for congressional office. but somewhat differently, here is the proportion of moderates and those who resemble olympia snowe and john tanner and ideologues that resembled a fine in the state legislative office who ran for congress. to be sure, hardly anyone run for office at all, but running for the congressional office nearly 3% of state legislators that resemble pelosi and john boehner compares to .6% of democratic and .2% of republicans who resemble snow. the short story is moderate state legislators are less likely to com run for congress d conservative republicans and liberal democrats. the difference is across the type of state legislators it is striking. in the next couple of slides i will show you the open seats in particular due to the fact that most state legislators wait for an open seat and board members entered through open seats. how the candidates opened the seats

however, whether or not members like olympia snowe who are as moderate as olympia snowe or john tanner whether they could get elected it would be an uphill battle but relatively moderate candidates could certainly win and there have been a handful of studies, apart from general impressions that is distasteful, pretty undesirable situation, i think it is the case that relatively moderate candidates could win. is it the case that only very conservative republicans can win or very liberal or do we have people a little more moderate than party leaders? i looked at this a little bit and this is the worst slide in history but there's a lot of information in it and this is victory pattern. you probably can't read it. the republicans around the party, 50%, 50% of candidates were right around the party, 30% were more conservative than the party and 15% were more on the moderate side of the party but as the proportion of those who run, we think about three types of candidates, moderates, conformist and ideologues, 75% of the conformists, 50% of ideologues, 63% of moderates on the republican side

that the number of candidates who ran for congress between 2,002,012 were at least as moderate as olympia snowe in the top you can see the number who ran in the 25 most conservative district. before that we have the 25 districts in districts with the most liberal republican partisan. to be sure, larger number of olympia snowe's are running and liberal districts with more liberal republican partisan. in some ran in with most conservative. we must also keep in mind these figures spend dozen election sparkles very few are running for congress regardless of the makeup of the district of the nearly four paul thousand candidates who ran only 228 in short, individuals have opted out of elections and whether active it's our less conservative or whether it's a tossup way look at the democrats it shows the number of democrats at least as moderate across the different types. a larger number of candidates like john tanner ran in conservative districts and in districts with the more conservative in a small ran in the most liberal district and those with most liberal democratic. but the general pattern
