it was the first olympics in the united states. it was the third modern olympics to occur. the fact that it ever occurred in st. louis is pretty remarkable. chicago put in the bid, and st. louis was very adamant that the games be held there. it was the anniversary of the louisiana purchase. they wanted to have the world's fair in the olympics together. it was a bit of a coup that st. louis got the olympics at all. at that time, people were not familiar with st. louis. there was no direct travel, especially for athletes coming from europe. they had to take a long transatlantic voyage, and then take a train ride to a small secondary city that they knew little about. that reason, over 500 of this hundred plus athletes were american. it was an overwhelming thing for an international event overwhelmingly american. it was very very different. the olympics itself lasted 146 days. that is something we don't see today. over four months. it was very unorganized. people who participated sometimes did not even know that they were participating in an event, until they received an olympi

i've done several stories, special olympics, this weekend new jersey celebrates special olympics.to follow a fellow around. his name is scott i. he really experiences what special olympics is all about. yesterday, dottie and 2500 athletes competed in day one of new jersey special olympics. for maureen by or ski she remembers it wasn't always full speed ahead. she remembers her son was discouraging. told herself just remember, one thing you're the expert about him, not them. and found scott think an athletic outlet. when he started special olympics it gave him a sense of belonging. scott competes as a year round athlete in track, swimming and golf. he runs and throws thereafter license in the summer games at tcnj his parents al mater. when he would stop to waive and i said, no, you got to focus. i had to work extremely h hard. > by practicing every week with the high school track volunteer trainers, scott' hard work paid off. he did out than staying. he had that focus. he kept his eyes on the price. i did it. i got the gold. > yesterday scott won two gold medals in the 200-meter da

halfway through the olympics we get a call from the family. we have been staying in touch with them. for the 1st for the 1st time we are encouraged. if you want to come down and see them and i now would be the time. so i jumped on an airplane and flew to denver where he was in this great rehab facility. and i was overwhelmed by the quality of the family.this young man across the line and making them well again. his brothers were so emotional. you don't know what it's like to go and see your brother and not know whether he's going to make it or not. kevin later not. kevin later said can migrate my brothers because they pushed me so hard in rehab. the youngest son is a down syndrome child going up and down the hallways of the rehab center and grabbing every dr.'s and saying is my brother. kevin and pierce father and mother. they were so appropriate and their emotions. we didn't know how to turn out. i called back to vancouver to our executive producer of olympic coverage. in the olympics are on that's what people want to see. it's hard to break
