it was the first olympics in the united states. it was the third modern olympics to occur. the fact that it ever occurred in st. louis is pretty remarkable. chicago put in the bid, and st. louis was very adamant that the games be held there. it was the anniversary of the louisiana purchase. they wanted to have the world's fair in the olympics together. it was a bit of a coup that st. louis got the olympics at all. at that time, people were not familiar with st. louis. there was no direct travel, especially for athletes coming from europe. they had to take a long transatlantic voyage, and then take a train ride to a small secondary city that they knew little about. that reason, over 500 of this hundred plus athletes were american. it was an overwhelming thing for an international event overwhelmingly american. it was very very different. the olympics itself lasted 146 days. that is something we don't see today. over four months. it was very unorganized. people who participated sometimes did not even know that they were participating in an event, until they received an olympi
