now that's a concern here in omaha.iowa side is the community of council bluffs and then farther south is a community of hamburg which has already experienced some very significant flooding with some levees breaking in that area. as you mentioned the college world series is scheduled this weekend and local officials are very concerned about people's ability to get to the game. >> the roads here, i-80 is open, of course, there are some other roads that are closed, but i-80 is east/west, shouldn't be a problem getting here. we've -- all of our hotels in the downtown area have a preparation plan, emergency preparation plan. we're checking with them today and continue to do that daily. they'll have excess sandbags if they need them. hopefully they won't need them. we're very conscientious about what could happen. we were planing for the worst. praying for the best. >> reporter: now, part of those plans for the worst are bringing in some giant pumps from other states to try to pump water out of low-lying areas. there's alrea

calhoun station outside omaha are now under water. officials say it is a controlled situation, because the plant has been shut since april for refueling. but there's a second issue, as flood waters have come within inches of the cooper nuclear station down river, and it is still operational, under observation tonight. so, back to you, again, neal. tell me what will happen if water begins to rise over an operational nuclear plant. >> reporter: well, the concern, of course, here, is knocking out the power, which could knock out the cooling systems of these nuclear plants. now, right now, along the levels of concern they can have in a nuclear power plant in a situation like this, it is important to note these are at the lowest. however, they have put up an eight-foot berm to block off the water at the plant just outside of omaha. they've also put extra people on site, given them sat phones and backup generators. in the wake of the fukushima crisis, they are not taking chances, diane. >> though, at this moment, their concern, they say, is

calhoun nuclear power plant in omaha, and downriver, waters are also rising along the cooper station plant. mike tiabbi is at ft. calhoun, nebraska tonight. >> reporter: this is not the biggest threat just from flooding that a nuclear power plant has ever faced in this country, actually it's two plants, this one at ft. calhoun which was shut down earlier this year and one at cooper station about 80 miles south of here near the town of brownsville. but federal and local authorities believe that neither plant is in danger. >> the ft. calhoun nuclear plant is now an island. an aqua berm that had been built to shield the plant from the surrounding river. floodwaters would have to rise an unlikely eight feet higher for key buildings to be threatened. and if that happens, additional emergency measures are in place. >> despite some of these challenges, fundamentally, we don't believe that the plant is posing an immediate threat to public health and safety. >> reporter: 80 miles down the river, the cooper nuclear station continues to operate at full capacity. nrc officials toured this facili

unfortunately we may find out sooner or later as just this week a nuclear power plant omaha nebraska is declared a state of emergency the fort calhoun nuclear plant is bracing for flooding from the nearby missouri river not only that the same plant suffered an electrical fire yesterday and had to briefly turn up the cooling pumps that prevent a meltdown officials of the nuclear regulatory commission claim that no radiation has been released at the imperial plant joining me now to talk more about the risks of nuclear power and the latest coming out of japan is dr arjun markey johnny president of the institute for energy and environmental research and author of numerous papers and books including carbon free and nuclear free a roadmap for u.s. energy policy dr matas johnny welcome to the program thank you so much i'm so glad to have you with us today. how is a melt through more serious than a meltdown what happens if the ship when you just have melted fuel a nuclear reactor just like a pressure cooker. steel pressure and the radioactivities inside that's a different the fuel is inside

for this nuclear power plant and the other one is the cooper nuclear power plant which is south of omaha and it is a twin to the fukushima daiichi units one through four it's a general electric boiling water reactor of the mark one designed cal for calhoun is a pressurized water reactor so yes if you were to lose the electrical grid. and the emergency diesel generators would plunge these reactors into a station blackout they only have four hours of battery as opposed to fukushima which had eight hours of battery hopefully they will keep the grid going out there hopefully the emergency diesels are ready to go but just last year the nuclear regulatory commission cited for calhoun for being unprepared for a flood they gave them a yellow finding which is the second highest another violation fortunately of the n.r.c. caught it and enforce their regulations last year or we could be in march or they wouldn't have the rubber dam around there and perhaps so the devil's in the details lucky to have enforced that regulation today we were looking at the n.r.c. site in our city. and the nuclear regul
