navy battleships off omaha and utah beach. the nevada off utah and the arkansas and texas off omaha, and their biggest guns were 14-inch guns, substantial webbons that when fired in a salvo created both a visual, oral impact that's almost unforgettable. the troops on board when that's salvos were fired later claimed if felt like their clothes were being ripped off their bodies. sailors 50 yards away still on board the ship, their ears and noses began to bleed just from the concussion. and, of course, the troops heading for shore, the shells flew directly over their heads heading into the beach. so the impact was tremendous. the shells from 15-inch guns on the -- what were called monitors, there was one monitor off the american beaches and another off the british beaches, and two large british battleships off the british beaches that fired 15-inch guns. their shells were nearly 2,000 pounds with a range of 20 miles. so tremendous impact. the difficulty here, of course, is the shortness of the time frame to conduct that prelimin
