six dozen young leaders on omaha. leaders who never been in combat before, who would kick and shove, punch inshout and scream and take that combat knive and stick them in the back of young americans who they thought were dead, get them to stand up and run in the line of fire and get off that beach. six dozen, changed history, i believe. courage matters. it matters. here is a picture of omaha beach. it's a bad map. i'm using it to show you one thing. not one of the defenses, german defenses was taken by an assault. that's how costly it was. all of them were outflanked. not one taken from the front. here we have some statistics. not going to bore you. my eye sight is really bad. omaha beach 4700 casualties. over 900 killed. it was a blood bath. as you know, the water ran red and a slaughter house for company a on the sector. 116th infantry regimen company a, original 6.5 miles of the beach. only units to land in the right place at the right time. 6:32 a.m., 180 guys, 102 killed in neighbor 20 maybe 20 or 25 minutes. tha

i live, as she said, in omaha. i was reading the african-american newspaper in omaha. i was like, i would never come to vacation in omaha. no, no, no. but it was surprising reading that. i'm sorry, omaha. it really is a great place. but people don't think of people comeing to vacation in omaha. when i live in omaha, people always ask me, are there any african-americans in omaha? i think this newspaper helps to detract from that preconceived notion of what omaha is. i would like to share some of -- some interesting things that i found in my research so far. this project is in its infancy. so these things are merely anecdotal at this point. i would like to follow up on them. the length of vacations. i'm surprised how long people are taking vacations for, month-long vacations are normal, seemingly, in some of these newspapers. and we don't think about people taking vacations that long, particularly people -- these are not rich people. not just the elite, but kind of normal, everyday, middle-class african-americans are taking month-long vacations. what was giving them the

the story of omaha beach is entirely different. when i was looking for media to illustrate the story of omaha beach, i looked at the common illustrations we all know. then i came across the story of the postcards. how do you prepare an army to land in northern france? in 1942, an announcement went over the bbc, if any listeners had holiday snaps or postcards or guidebooks or brochures for hotels of their time in france, could they send them into the bbc because they would be of use in what was called future operations. the bbc immediately regretted this broadcast of the war office. by the end of the week, 30,000 items arrived. if i tell you by 1944 that total reached 10 million, you realize how much the bbc regretted going down this route. now, most of these went into the incinerator. but those of normandy captured the imagination of the planners. we have a picture postcard, the western end of omaha beach. this is how it looked in 1910 on a picture postcard somewhat sent -- someone sent to someone else. it arrives in london where t
