omar?rter: good evening, memorials will flowers and crosses are growing, as the city is starting their grieving process after this week's deadly terrorist attack. now, this morning at the city of love church, dozens of people gathered to remember the victims and honor those first responders. the mayor and other city leaders thanked police for their work in the aftermath. 13 of the 14 people killed have now been identified, including a new one, 31-year-old edward pettifer, who is a british citizen. more than 30 others were injured. many still recovering in local hospitals. now, as investigation ramps up, cbs news has learned that earlier in 2024, the suspect posted several audio recordings to sound cloud, saying music was, quote, the voice of satan, and warning it could lead people to forbidden acts like using drugs and alcohol. now, next week we're also expecting the first of several victim lawsuits to be filed against the city of new orleans and the new orleans police department. lawyers t

omar jimenez on the ground for us in new orleans. thank you very much. there are also some new questions tonight. if potential warning signs were missed after cnn reviewed internal government documents warning law enforcement just last month of potential violence from lone offenders around the holidays and the potential use of vehicles as deadly weapons. here now is cnn's brian todd. brian, what can you tell us about these warnings? wolf, at the moment, these warnings seem to have been very farsighted. and on the mark. but national security experts tell us the reality is that some of these attacks are extremely hard to prevent as law enforcement officials scramble to determine the motive of the new orleans suspect. new information tonight on recent warnings that these very same types of attacks could occur. according to two internal memos obtained by cnn, the department of homeland security and the fbi issued a joint bulletin to law enforcement agencies on december 6th warning about threats from lone wolf offenders and the possibility of vehicle rammings

omar. thank you. let's go to veronica now. she's been following news of this explosion in las vegas since it happened. veronica, what's the latest on that investigation? well, brianna, tonight we are learning from our john miller that according to multiple law enforcement officers, this person who died in this attack, the driver of the cybertruck has a military background. >> now, authorities say they do know the name of this driver, but they are not releasing this person's identity until they notify the next of kin. but they did say that this person rented the cybertruck in colorado via turo, drove the cybertruck down to las vegas, and was in vegas for about an hour before it pulled in front of trump tower in the valet area. when that explosion happened, we were able to see video that they released that shows the explosives that were contained inside. right there you can see the tesla bed, the cybertruck bed, and some of those explosives included fireworks, gas tanks and camping fuel. and all of that was connected to a detona

omar, thank you for the report from new orleans. here with us now is cnn's senior justice correspondent, evan perez, who has been working his sources as the fbi is taking charge of this investigation. what are you learning about how this is going? >> well, one of the things going on right now, brianna, is the the fbi is trying to determine who else or if anyone else could have been involved in this. obviously, the the fact that they found an i.s.i.s. flag leads you to, to to wonder whether there is either people here or somewhere else that this person was in touch with or talking to the person had some intent to do this, and we don't know how long they've been planning it, but this is something that now is an investigation that stretches all the way to texas, where the vehicle was registered. and it appears where this person had some some ties, some links. and so that's one of the that's part of what the work the fbi is doing at this hour, which is to try to find people who knew the suspect, people who may have seen and heard someth

i want to bring in cnn's omar jimenez. omar, what does that video show? >> yeah. >> so this video picks up just after 3 a.m. this is when the terror attack actually happened. and it's a very specific portion of those early morning hours that the police release. it is after the truck has essentially come to a stop on bourbon street. this is after he would have killed the at least 14 people hitting that he hit with his truck, as we understand. and that is when this video picks up. i'm just going to play it for you and we'll talk about it on the other side. so that exchange of gunfire, you saw the officers essentially approaching the driver's side of the door. the airbags had already been deployed, so it seems like the truck had already crashed. and it seemed like there may have been before. this video picked up a brief moment of. i don't want to call it pause, but enough of a moment for officers to get close enough to that driver's side vehicle. and then there's a specific frame of the video i want to show you that. police also highlighted as well. you see

omar. and i do want to go to las vegas now, where natasha chen is, and natasha, because i know that you have just gotten some new information about information notes that the cybertruck driver left behind. what have you found out? >> aaron, in the last ten minutes or so, investigators here in las vegas sent the full transcript of a couple of letters they found that they believe were written by matthew livelsberger. this these writings are covering a range of grievances. they he talks about political grievances, cultural issues, for example, not being a fan of diversity initiatives, expressed support for president trump and elon musk. that's the first time we're seeing direct mention of the former president. he also talks about conflicts overseas. he talks about domestic issues, societal issues, and there is also a letter addressed to fellow service members during the press conference this afternoon. there were some portions of these letters read to the media by investigators in hopes that i

we want to get straight to cnn's omar jimenez live in new orleans right now. omar, quick turnaround for you. i think you were in a neighboring state, mississippi, last night. what are you seeing now that you're on the ground there? yeah. >> so here in new orleans, we are just outside the french quarter here. >> so just over my shoulder here, you see this line of state troopers. and then about a block from where we're standing, they of course got all this area blocked off. >> that is where officials have been investigating the scene. >> that is likely the focal point of where all of this happened. >> we, of course, haven't been able to get over there to sort of cross verify with some of the videos that we've been seeing. but over the course of this, we have seen coroner's vans come in and out over over the course of even just the few minutes that we've been here, we've seen investigators, of course, go in and out of this caution tape. so still a very, very active scene. but then, of course, as this is happening, we still have a lot of people. this is obviously

cnn's omar jimenez is there on the scene. omar, what are you hearing from officials and people who actually witnessed this attack? >> yeah, i think in short, it's shock for a lot of the people who either witnessed the attack directly or saw people running in any direction. we talked to a shop owner who actually has a store. that's right on bourbon street, and what he told us is he had his store open lot later than normal because it was new year's eve. he wanted to try and accommodate the extra swell of people that he said he saw there. and while he says he's seen violence at times in the past in that area, and unfortunately is has welcomed people into his store who have run from whether it's a gunfire or a fight. in previous times, this was completely different and he went running in the other direction, just as he had closed up shop. but of course, it is just one of many stories as investigators try to get to the heart of not just how this happened, but exactly why and through, which means sudden terror on bourbon street. >>

cnn's omar jimenez joins us now with the details. omar, walk us through the footage. >> yeah.this footage happened just after 3 a.m. the early morning of the attack, the early morning of new year's day, and it picks up essentially after the truck had already barreled through bourbon street, hitting people and killing people, as we know as well. and what you're going to see is officers approaching the driver's side of the crashed truck where airbags, airbags have already deployed. and then police say gunshots came from inside the truck. they returned gunfire. and you'll see how quickly things change in truly a millisecond. and as you warned as well, i'll do the same. some of what you're about to see may be disturbing. so you see just how quickly that happens there. two officers were injured in that. of course, the driver was killed as well. but i want to bring up a specific frame of that video because it happens very quickly. here is you see that red circle there? it appears to be a muzzle flash from behind the deployed airbag. so police believe that he shot from behind again.
