let's begin our coverage with omar jimenez live in minneapolis this morning. give us a sense of the night there, omar. >> reporter: that's right, john the night that passed was more peaceful than the course of the past week. it's been a week since george floyd's death and city has seen a lot. boarded up businesses like here and burned out structures became more commonplace as we saw largely peaceful protests during the days and at times literal nights in a rove anarchy as described by governor tim walz at times. they seemed to hit a turning point. saturday we saw the largest law enforcement presence than we've seen to date. sunday was a manifestation of that making a trend towards peaceful protests where we saw them again. people honored the memory of floyd and also try to push for a better future. one scary moment came during protests happening on the interstate here and a tanker truck came barreling towards the crowd. but no one was hurt and the driver was arrested and charged with salt and the pose full protests continued. fear that led to violence. within t

let's begin coverage with omar jimenez who is live in minneapolis. what's the situation there overnight? >> reporter: alisyn, we're coming out of curfew in minneapolis. it was to keep the protests peaceful. largely over the course of the week since george floyd's death. the cycle has been peaceful protests during the day, potential violence and rioting and some looting at night and cleanup the next morning. turning point seemed to come over the weekend. saturday was the largest law enforcement response we had seen yet. now something officials said was going to happen because they did not want to continue seeing the literal anarchy as described by the government. we got to sunday where largely all the peaceful protests we saw were peaceful. some were on the interstate. others at the site where george flied was seen pinned to the ground and that now infamous cell phone video. people from all walks of life. including the police chief. chief madeira arradondo. he paid respects himself. he kneeled in front of the makeshift memorial, saying as you mentione

our omar jimenez joins us again in minneapolis. two autopsies, omar. now both say homicide. >> reporter: that's right, poppy and jim. two separate autopsies but they both point to the fact that what happened to george floyd in this intersection behind me eight days ago now was a homicide. now, where these two reports differ, one comes from an independent autopsy commissioned by the family saying and pointing to asphyxia being the main reason there, while a report commission by the hennepin county medical examiner points to a cardiopulmonary arrest, essentially heart failure there. if you look at some of the details they put in this, other conditions including fentanyl intoxication and recent meth use, but on those they didn't say how much actually influenced his system and whether that contributed to the homicide, as they say, in any factor. but when you look at what they're going to be examining moving forward, this no doubt will play into how the either criminality or not is viewed by the officer that is already charged, officer derek chauvin and the

but first, we begin with our colleague omar jimenez. omar, today is a day about remembering the life of george floyd. what can we expect? >> that's right, poppy and jim. not just remembering the life but celebrating the legacy he is now leaving behind, from minnesota, to north dakota and now here in texas and houston. george floyd is set to go to his final resting place. the funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. local time and afterwards the police department will escort floyd's body to parland, texas. and the last mile of that procession will be by horse-drawn carriage so people can pull up and watch that procession. again, as he makes his way toward what will be his final resting place buried next to his mother. now, this comes not just houston but others who have mourned the death of floyd and realized that his death has now brought them into the moment of police reform that is continuing to play out across the country and the combination of the two emotions play out in the words of family members that have been speaking out over the c

cnn's stephanie elam in los angeles, omar jimenez. omar, we begin with you. take us to what was a very troubling weekend. >> reporter: john, over the course of days, we seem to wake up and show you the destructive aftermath of protests. what you see behind me is the aftermath of peaceful protests. this is actually the site where george floyd was seen on cell phone video down on the pavement under the knee of officer derek chauvin. this has become a makeshift memorial. they have tried to stem what one governor described as 48 hours of anarchy. saturday was probably the turning point in all of this where we saw the strongest law enforcement response yet in regards to they pushed into the protestors rather than waiting back and allowing them to come forward and they used a lot of disbursal tactics as well to, again, try to prevent the protesting they had seen during the daytime from turning into some of the violent rioting, looting and buildings on fire. yesterday seemed to be a manifestation of that. largely peaceful protests including here. this is where the p

we start in minneapolis with omar jimenez. >> reporter: protests we have seen today and the course of yesterday have looked a lot like this where at times there were music playing and peaceful during the daytime hours and yesterday and the nighttime hours was the first time we clearly seen more of a peaceful vibe especially as compares to what we have seen in the later weeks of last week. they stayed the entire night until 6:00 a.m. central of the same spot here. think beefed up the amount of law enforcement that we have seen over the weekend, saturday was a transitional day where there were heavy clashes and violent at times between police and protesters. on sunday there were some clashes, things transitioned actually. the vast majority of those, over a 100 of them seemed to be a peaceful manner. former officer chauvin, his court day has been moved back a week. we expect to hear of family of george floyd's is expected to be here and we'll be hearing from the family's attorney over the autopsy report that of course the family wanted because they said they would trust it more than the

we want to begin in minneapolis with omar jimenez where the memorial for george floyd will happen today. omar? >> reporter: that's right, john. the news of the four officers being charged was what many protestors, the family, many in this community have been hoping for. even with that news we saw demonstrations across the country, largely peaceful. ground zero at the intersection where george floyd's final breaths were taken were met with applause and cheers. large demonstrations on display from coast to coast for a ninth day in a row. crowds with hundreds, sometimes thousands marching in the name of george floyd. the protests, as all four officers involved in floyd's arrest are now behind bars facing charges related to his death. >> george floyd mattered. he was loved, his family was important. his life had value and we will seek justice for him and for you and we will find it. >> upgraded charges. thomas lane, j. alexander king and tou thao all charged with aiding and abetting. cheers in minneapolis as protesters heard the news but offering this warning it's often difficult to convict

first let's go, though, to omar jimenez. he's in minneapolis. omar, do the best you can to give a picture of the broad range of things you've seen happening in minneapolis over the last couple of days. >> reporter: well, jim and poppy, minneapolis has been through a lot even over the course of the past week. typically what the cycle has been is you see peaceful protesting during the day, and then at nighttime it evolves into rioting and looting, and in the morning you have the cleanup. i showed you over the past week the destructive time of things. this is actually a peaceful time. last night people sat in a circle here in peaceful protest. they defied the curfew put in place by the state and the city here. so even though police came, police allowed them to stay here, and they stayed here until the curfew was over at 6:00 a.m. this morning. now people come and reflect next to the site where george floyd was seen on that cell phone video under the knee of derek chauvin who is facing criminal charges himself of third-degree murder and manslaughter

cnn's omar jimenez joins us live with the latest. omar? >> reporter: alisyn, more than a week after george floyd's death, the pain is still very raw for those that knew him best. we sat down with his daughter, gianna, six years old. the mother of that daughter, roxie washington. steven jackson, a friend and former nba player and chris stuart their lawyer. they told me he moved from houston, texas to minneapolis to find work to provide for the family. a family, they say he was very much present for. so i asked the mother how she even began to try and explain what had happened to george floyd to their 6-year-old daughter. she said at first she couldn't. >> she was standing by the door. she said, mama, something going on with my family. i said why you say that? she said, because i hear them saying my dad's name on tv. she wanted to know how he died. and the only thing i can tell her is he couldn't breathe. >> we have to get conviction. that's what we're talking about. we have to get conviction. these tears are from real pain. the only way the

omar jimenez is joining me live now. before we talk about these specific officers, tell me about the city council vote. officials say the changes will be short term pending the results of an investigation. >> reporter: we spoke to the city council earlier this morning troig ying to get a senf what this meeting is going to be about. we seen an investigation ordered by the state into indianapolis police department. that review is going to take some time. officials here felt their community and they could not wait that long. these are short term measures that could include police disciplinary actions. these are measures that could impact use of force policies and we know the city council president who i have followed for a while now based on different questions that are coming into place. and today, yesterday, i should say she tweeted they would dismantle the police department in favor of moving toward as safety measure. that's going to be debated and you will see it play out in just about 30 minutes or so. as you alluded t
