back with me now, cnn's omar jimenez.ion, there are calls for a federal investigation into jelani day's death, right? >> reporter: yeah, don. and those calls are coming from a number of fronts. we heard them today from the family of course, from reverend jesse jackson and most recently from congressman bobby rush, who specifically called on attorney general merrick garland and fbi director chris wray to launch a federal investigation into the disappearance and death of jelani day. i want to read a little of the letter that congressman rush sent to attorney general garland and director wray, and he described it as a letter of grave concern and compared it to emmett till saying, as i learn the details of day's case, i was reminded of the lynching of emmett till, whose body was found floating in a river in 1955 and still, decades later, no one has been held legally accountable for his death. of course jelani day was found floating in the illinois river, and his family is asking for accountability. i should mention the fbi di

cnn's omar jimenez is in chicago with the latest. >> reporter: well, fred, bottom line, police officersbe on the job this weekend, and as expected by the chicago police department and the mayor of chicago. this comes on the tail end of a week where we've been hearing from the head of the chicago police union urging chicago police officers not to comply with the city's vaccine policy which, of course, is at the center of all of this. the vaccine policy is by october 15th, which was yesterday at this point, you have to disclose your vaccination status. and if you don't, you get placed on no pay status. basically unpaid leave. you have to be vaccinated. and if you're not, you choose to go into a twice weekly testing option. in the midst of all of this, there, of course, has been a lot of back and forth between the city and police union. the city miled legal paperwork, asking a judge to stop the head of the police union, from urging officers not to comply with this policy. well, they got their wish, as the judge issued late friday, a temporary restraining order saying that the police union

cnn's omar jimenez is here with an update. first, what do we know about this minnesota shooting. shooting, three men were arrested. in the georgia shooting a man has been taken into custody and charged with murder. in georgia, 26-year-old dillon harrison was the police officer shot and killed during his very first shift on the job. police say he was ambushed outside the alamo police department, and about a mile away from where the shooting took place, damian ferguson was taken into custody, and he's now been charged with murder. the officer is survived by his wife and six month old son. in st. paul, minnesota, three men were arrested in connection with a shooting at a bar that killed 27-year-old markeisha wiley, and injured over a dozen others. take a listen to the dj at the time who described what was happening when those shots first rang out. >> i'm trying spinning on the stage, and having fun in the moment, and i hear a pop pop pop pop pop, everybody goes down. i'm like, okay, they're still shooting, but the music is plague. i reached up to turn the music off. i was like, okay

here's cnn's omar jimenez. >> no justice, no peace! >> reporter: familiar chants for what some see as a familiar story. this time playing out in bend, oregon. a black man, barry washington jr., was shot and killed allegedly after complimenting a white woman. no evidence of the compliments being inappropriate according to the local district attorney, who also says washington was then confronted by the woman's boyfriend, ian cranston. >> he said some words to mr. washington. mr. washington said words back. there was some pushing, some jostling, some punches thrown. but then it calmed down. it was not going to get out of hand. then mr. cranston pulled a gun out of his waistband and shot and killed mr. washington. >> reporter: cranston's attorney disputed that account and wrote to cnn, in part, before ian cranston ever drew his weapon, barry washington had assaulted him without provocation, resulting in head injuries that required the police to take mr. cranston to the hospital, where a brain scan and other procedures had to be performed.

cnn's omar jimenez is live in chicago.n is headed to court. >> reporter: that's right. there's a court hearing ongoing right now. just a few moments ago, city lawyers argued that the head of the police union can't keep holding the city hostage. it's part of why they filed their court documents asking a judge to stop the head of this union from threatening a work stoppage because of this vaccine mandate. as you can imagine, the union disagrees and in this court hearing that i mentioned is ongoing, they said, well, because it's going to take a few days to verify who is in compliance with this mandate and who isn't there is no emergency of a work stoppage or threat of officers being off the job, at least this weekend and for the next few days. and they also allege in their own court documents that the mayor, the city and the chicago police superintendent acted unilaterally which goes against their collective bargaining agreement. the city disagrees. this all stems from the requirement for city employees to report their vaccin
