omar jimenez, cnn, grand rapids, michigan. >> thank you, omar.r acting baltimore police commissioner and cnn law enforcement analyst and cnn legal analyst and criminal defense attorney joey jackson. in the video of that traffic stop the officer tells patrick his license plate doesn't match the vehicle. there is an escalation that turns deadly. do you see anything from that video from that chase, that the officer should have done differently? >> well, yes. first, you pull a vehicle over and the operator of the vehicle jumps out of the vehicle, that's a red flag. as an officer and patrol, i've done a job. you stop. you assess what's going on here because that's not normal. you would call for backup and wait for backup to come. instead the officer approaches and everything goes downhill from there. so that's one issue. also, was there a chance to just disengage and not continue? yes. but the officer also was placing him under arrest, and we see that he resisted arrest. he didn't comply with numerous requests including drop the taser. we're locked in

we will see truth. . >> omar jimenez joins me now.een protests in grand rapids tonight. what are people saying? ? >> reporter: we've seen protests throughout the evening. things doctor "v" calmed down now, but earlier there were hundreds marching and demonstrating in downtown grand rapids outside a very barricaded police department chanting "justice for patrick lyoya." familiar calls, different case. now, there's still an ongoing investigation, of course, to determine whether this officer's actions were justified or whether he crossed a line. but the attorney for the lyoya family, ben crump, is already calling this use of force unnecessary and excessive and joins a chorus of people calling not only for the firing of this officer, but also the arrest and prosecution of this officer as well, don. >> listen, omar, we've covered so many of these incidents at this network. a man is dead over a car registration. the whole thing happened in just two minutes and 40 seconds. but this isn't really cut and dry. >> reporter: it's not. there's a l

cnn's omar jimenez is live in grand rapids, michigan, for us where there is a news conference with the now. omar, what are you learning from this? what do they have to say? >> reporter: victor, this is really the first time we've heard publicly from the family since the videos of the shooting were released, and we just heard moments ago from the father of patrick, and i want to summarize what he said. he once said i didn't know in america there could be an execution. that's how the family has characterized what they have seen play out on video up until this point. he also said that patrick was his life and as patrick's life ended so, too, has his as a father. that's how he feels at this moment. this is a family that spread from the republic of congo. she says they ran from war and are surprised that here of all places her son was killed by a bullet. now we've also been hearing from the family attorney and throughout the recounting of this and the description of this that happened in early april, they have been in tears because, as you can imagine, at the center of all of this news and
