i want to bring in now cnn's omar jimenez who is in detroit for us.etectives showed up at woll's home today, and what have they learned? >> right now a lot of the detectives and police personnel are still on the scene and i think when people hear the headline they want to jump to conclusions. that is exactly what police are cautioning against right now mainly because they don't have those conclusions a the this point as we understand. they told us we'd get an update at some point and haven't gotten that just yet. i want to give you an idea where we are near downtown detroit. just behind me on this block is where the body of 40-year-old samantha woll was found. police followed a trail of blood from her body to her home which is where they believed this killing happened. they don't have anyone in custody. they don't have a suspect named as we understand at this point and also don't know what led up to this killing. a lot of questions still in the air here. regardless of how it happened, it did happen and it is why there has been a memorial service today

i want to bring in cnn's omar jimenez tonight. he is in lewiston. omar, it has been 48 hours of sheer terror in this town. we now know that the person who they were searching for was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. what are you hearing from the community about this all tonight? >> reporter: well, for starters that in some ways this still isn't over because for many of these people they still have relatives in the hospital. they still have friends trying to recover in the hospital. they're still hoping to get good news some of those conditions will improve. of course, it is welcome news that they can breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief that, one, the shelter in place orders are lifted. they may not have to look over their shoulders as much as they have over the last 48 hours not knowing where this dangerous suspect could be, a suspect that police had said was armed and dangerous. and so, of course, that is a good thing. but as we move forward here while it's at least 18 that were killed here, there are countless other lives that t

cnn's omar jimenez joining us now from lisbon, maine, not far from where the suspect's body was found? >> reporter: yeah, so amara and victor, yeah, as you mentioned, we're not far from where the suspect's body was found. police believe or law enforcement sources tell cnn that the body was found near recycling plant, likely somewhere in the area in the woods back there. but obviously officers are not letting us get any closer than where we are right now. that said, this is the close of major chapter for this community because for many it had created a sense of unease here. over the last what became more than 48 hours as people did not know where this armed and dangerous suspect was, as police described him, people didn't know if they could potentially run into him. and of course, this is someone that police said shot and killed at least 18 people across two locations within minutes of each other wednesday night. now, to give people an idea now that we are a few days removed of how this all unfolded, the shooting. if first shooting happened wednesday night at a bowling alley. minutes l

i want to bring in cnn's omar jimenez who is in detroit.sidering the atensions, investigators are urging people not to draw conclusions about woll's death. what are you learning? >> reporter: from the headline alone, it made people jump to conclusions quickly. it's why police are cautioning against jumping to any. specifically the detroit police chief said in a statement that, understandably this crime leaves many unanswered questions. this matter is under investigation. i'm asking for everyone to remain patient while investigators examine every aspect of the available evidence. it's important that no conclusions be drawn until all the facts are reviewed. they also said they would be giving an update today. we haven't heard anything from police so far. what we do know is where i am right now, just outside or just next to downtown detroit, 40-year-old samantha woll, her body was found just behind me here on this particular block. it's why detectives are on the scene right now. we've seen them going in and out of a home on that particular blo

cnn's omar jimenez has the latest from lewiston. >> reporter: after a more than 48-hour manhunt, the suspect in the mass shootings at both of these locations in lewiston, maine, has been found dead by apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound according to law enforcement. now, look, this is the end of what has been a very tense chapter for many in this community, wondering where this person may be, especially given the violent nature of what he was accused and what police believe he did. now, to give people an idea of where this body was found, we are outside the bar and grill which was the second location of the mass shootings that happened on wednesday night. this body was found just about ten minutes away from here in the town over from lewiston, which is where we are, in lisbon, maine. it was found near a recycling plant, where as we understand from law enforcement sources, a plant where he was fired from recently. and so at this point, this now begins the next phase of an investigation for officers to figure out, okay, what led up to the actions that they say he carried out over the

omar jimenez joins us. the signs that were missed, it's horrifying. >> it's horrifying. there were always two planes of investigations. one was trying to find where this person was, which we did. we found him dead. but also trying to figure out how this happened. according to information on taped by cnn, mid-september that law enforcement was responding to a wellness check on this shooter. because the national guardsman had reported that the shooter that he was concerned he would snap and commit a mass shooting. plus that law enforcement officer, according to information obtained, was told by the shooter's family that he had been answering the door with a handgun out of view. that said, there was an attempt to check on him, but then a missing persons report appears to have been filed. then the case was closed on october 1st. so there's still a lot of questions as to what made them close that, if that was the case. and all of that for context wides was happening weeks before these mass shootings actually happened. >> red flag there is. the members of the community that we

we go to omar jimenez who is near there, and go through what we have just learned moments ago. >> yeah, so we learned a lot, but we are also left with a lot of questions. for starters, investigators or police gave us the scope of the leads and tips they have been getting. multitude, and they laid out over 530 tips and leads they have been getting and varying in what was credible and what wasn't, but it is an idea there. and also, they gave some clarity to what happened last night, but in the context of the moving forward, and what happened last night, they were outside of a house shouting come out with your hands up, and they say routine search warrant, and we will see more of that in places across the area, and maybe it could be because someone is there and could not be, and it is part of the process. they also laid out a multi faceted approach by land, by air, and to search for this person, and not just on the water, and literally in the water. take a listen to maine's public safety director. >> we will be putting divers in the water. this is going to be looking like a major focus to

i want to go now to omar jimenez on the ground in this grieving community of lewiston, of lizten, other neighboring communities right now. omar, you just heard what ralph said about this town and everyone now connected in this absolutely horrible way holding onto get through this. what are you hearing from people sheltering in place to learn the suspect is dead but they now have to bury their loved ones? >> yeah, i mean, look, one thing that has been made clear just over the past few days talking to people here it's not just everybody knows everybody. people also know people that know everybody. it is that tight-knit of a community where it feels like one thing happens. and when the news initially broke, we're outside the bar and grille which is the second site of where this mass shooting happened. a car tried to get through this checkpoint and obviously still closed because they continue to process the scene. he said that he left his car over there, he was inside this bar when it happened. and when we asked if he just wanted to talk about it, even in the midst of he knew that the manhu

omar jimenez is there in lewiston. shimon prokupecz has been in the middle of the manhunt in nearby lisbon. shimon, what can you tell us? >> reporter: poppy, i am standing at that boat launch that fil phil was talking about. police last night found the person of interest, where they found his car and that sort of kicked off this manhunt. >> this is kind of the area that police are searching. what they are doing is mostly responding to 911 calls. people are calling 911 to say they hear things, to say that there is an open door. we were present in one of those situations where there was a 911 call. police responded and they did a search and they found nothing. but certainly people here in lisbon are on edge. they have been told to stay home. school is closed. they have been told if they don't have to go to work, not to go to work. many of the stores are expected to be closed as well. we got a chance to speak to the police chief, the lisbon police chief, who talked to us about some of the things they have been going throu

. >> and so, s, omar jimenez, yo were there and what was not included in time line so far is the responseime of the police. why is that important, and what are you seeing in this? >> well, because there is this gap, right, between the -- several things. well, there is a time gap of 12 minutes or so from when the officers go to the first location at the bowling alley to the second location of the bar, and so there is a time period, and it is going to be from one location to the other, and the other thing with the time line is when did the officers first get to the bowling alley, and we also want to know, what were they doing when they got there? was there any at all contact along the way with the suspect, and i would assume no, but these are the details that we have been asking for since yesterday. they had the press conference yesterday, and they answered five questions, and they are feeling public from the public and the packed house of media asking questions and so when we want the nitty-gritty and specifics, it just seems that they want to back away are the that and not get into the sp
